Feb 3rd is the deadline to send nominations to [livejournal.com profile] darkgoddessgege for Round 11 of  the [livejournal.com profile] rwsawards, so it's your last chance to nominate your favorite authors and artists in buffyverse and SPN fandom.  Check out the list of current nominees here.

I noticed that at the moment there is only nomination in the "My Marker" (best beta) category, [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh. It's possible that there are other nominations pending in that category but if you have a muse who has shaped your work to be the best it can be, by all means give them a little love with a nomination. Betas are unsung heros, serving as muses, editors, collaborators, teachers, sounding boards, task masters and selection committees.

I wanted to nominate [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip in this category for all the work she does as a beta for my icons and artwork, but she has already maxed out on the number of nominations she can receive. As well she should. But it's worth pointing out that art betas are just as eligible to be nominated in this category as writing betas. (And yes, I have confirmed that with [livejournal.com profile] darkgoddessgege.) I am well-nigh certain that I'm not the only person using a beta-muse for help with my artwork because all artists (visual artists, writers, etc) need feedback. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Anyone who knows [livejournal.com profile] teragramm knows what a wonderful, talented artist and supportive, all around nice person she is, and so the news that she's been named the new mod at [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite is very happy news because I can't think of anyone better!  Let's join [livejournal.com profile] setentpet in giving [livejournal.com profile] teragramm our best wishes!

Courtesy of the voters at Round 15 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20, and the splendidly talented [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper who outdid herself in her usual brilliant way. Thank you so much! I think my icons look the best they ever have in their lovely frames; the Light Texture and Close Crop icon really pop, and I can actually appreciate how nice the Category icons look as a set in ways I couldn't before. And I love the sly meta nod to the Category theme challenge (Silver and Gold) in the conception and execution.

This is why I enjoy winning because I get pretty pretty banners (and feedback and strokes); it's entirely pavlovian and I honestly don't care as much as I should. Even though I know it's probably childish of me. I really have never understood the folks who win at icontests and then don't ask for banners because they don't need them. You guys are better people than me, honestly. I'm shallow. Sue me.

And while I have your attention:

[livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness 26 entries in Challenge 61, "Touch Me"; voting deadline Tuesday Feb 2.

[livejournal.com profile] actress_ic has 28 entries in the very cool "vintage" theme of Challenge 111. Voting open until Thursday Feb 4.

GOEST THOU AND VOTE!

I am participating in the Snowflake Challenge (on Dreamwidth) for the very first time - or trying to at any rate. I've never been much good at these "Post something every day" challenges, so let's see how this goes! The image below is a "static" image btw, not a link to the site because I can't get the link-y version to work, so clicking it will get you nowhere fast.  *le sigh*

Day 01

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ok this one is easy: I'm participating because it looked like fun last year, and because [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip encouraged me to do so this year. I don't think I mean to "accomplish" anything in particular except to see how many of these days I can actually cover. I usually avoid memes and daily posting types of things.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

This is gonna get slightly "political" so bear with me. My favorite part of this post is [livejournal.com profile] akamine_chan's extremely astute observation: Asking for things is hard. We're socialized to not ask for things, and in a lot of ways I think that's not necessarily a good thing. We feel guilt and shame when we ask, and that makes us less likely to ask for help, for care and consideration and kindness, for respect, when we all deserve those things.I think this is spot-on.

I tend to think of this as an American tendency but perhaps it's a "modern" tendency - pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Be entirely self-sufficient. Don't admit to weakness. It's American "rugged individualism" writ large, but it's also useful to super-capitalism: instead of people living together in extended families we've been conditioned to believe that everyone living in their own "nuclear family" is the one right and true way to live. Everybody in their own home with their own tv, their own radio, their own computer and their own washing machine, etc means more stuff to sell, sell sell and keep the almightly GDP going.  And even if you are receiving help or aid of some sort, we're conditioned to be ashamed of it, ashamed of ourselves as "failures".

ETA: A very very kind benefactor came through and granted my wish already with an extension of my paid account through 2018 AND even more icon space through the next year! I am just stunned and speechless beyond anything except to say THANK YOU to them. THANK YOU.

And thank you to everyone who I know would have done if you had the resources. I'm just overwhelmed by the love and support I've received here.  And people wonder why I hang out in fandom.

And in keeping with the theme of being ashamed to ask for stuff, I do actually have one wish and this really makes me cringe to ask. The paid LJ membership that someone gifted me with a year ago expires on Jan 12; and I'm pretty sure that the extra icon space that someone else gifted me with will disappear on that date and I'll be back down to 6 icon spaces. I had assumed by this point in time that I would be working again and would be able to renew it on my own, but I simply can't justify even that small outlay when there are things like rent and groceries to cover. The only part of the paid membership I really do take advantage of is the extra icon gallery space. I feel really weird about asking if anyone would consider gifting me with another year's paid membership, but I that's exactly what I'm asking for. *gulp* I would be most grateful. (And please not at the expense of your own food, rent, etc.)

Barring that, some help in selecting and paring down my icons would be most appreciated. But I'll probably do a separate post on that as I haven't had time to think about what ones I would keep.

Beyond that, I always want more kindness and understanding towards Buffy Summers, and fics that don't portray her as simply the accessory for a supporting male character, or a stone cold bitch who exists only to be punished. I'm always on the look-out for more Buffy and Dawn fics that is about the sisters and again, not about a man in the center, and in fact 2015 saw some really wonderful Summers Sisters fic; so I'm hopeful that there's more of an appreciation of their relationship. I'm also hopeful that more folks are inspired by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip's Answering Prayers and explore the character of Joyce Summers in ways that canon didn't bother to, and her relationship to her daughter. Spuffy fics that don't bash Willow or Drusilla? Yes please. Buffy and Tara friendship fics? Bring it on. Basically, anything that gives more face-time to the interrelationships of the women of the Buffyverse, not just for slashy porn and not to justify how "good" a male character is.

And I always wish for the various fandom factions and shipper factions to lay down arms, stop attacking each other, and see just how much we all have in common. We all want the same damn things for our beloved babies. We're all hurting over the things we were denied. Rather than attack each other, let's look for common ground - and attack TPTB who look down on fans with smug satisfaction and superiority whilst depending on us for their livelihood.  'kay?

So, I'm not feeling "Christmassy" this year, at all. But I do wish everyone a peaceful day and a peaceful season. Whatever you celebrate. (I was raised Catholic, I've been pagan, now I'm atheist, and I have friends all across the spectrum.)

[livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix asked me a while back to do some graphics for part 3 of her buffyverse/potterverse crossover fic "The Letters" (Severus Snape/Anya, Cordelia). It was the first time I've been commissioned to make fanart without having read the story first.  Dragony told me exactly what text she wanted to see on the graphics, including the brilliantly funny RSVP from Cordy.

[livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000 posted an amazing end-of-the-year fic rec list; some I've enjoyed, a good many others I've missed and must make amends for that. Because all the stories sound wonderful (and she hasn't steered me wrong yet.) She was also kind enough to name-check me and my artwork on the list! Thank you very much, I'm honored!

I will end up doing a recap of the year here in fandom in the near future but I want to say "THANK YOU" to the folks who have been so incredibly supportive of me in my growth and struggles this year. Special thanks and love to [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip for her guidance, friendship and for being in my corner.

I have to admit I'm glad 2015 is almost over.

And finally - I've read issue 22 of the season 10 comics and I have one thing to say, one really essential thing that NO ONE is talking about - WILLOW DOES NOT HAVE BLUE EYES, PEOPLE!

*Actually, Buffy's eyes also look suspiciously sort-kinda blue on page 23, which is weird because they were green in the rest of the story. But the color is just muddy enough that I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But Willow's eyes are absolutely blue - clear, beautiful, unmistakeable blue. The first issue that actually features Willow in any significant way this season and they can't get that one basic thing right. *le sigh*

For which there is no good excuse - especially since I'll be away from the 'puter from Wednesday night onward. And there is much to see, much to do, much to promote! So let's get cracking:

Banner by Tempertemper Oct 2015
Banner by [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper Oct 2015

First off, THANK YOU very much to the voters at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness for awarding my Buffy/DMP icon Best Crop in Round 54 and thank you [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper for the pretty pretty banner to go with! And congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy and [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer for your wins this round!  The theme was "Roy G Biv" and we could submit up to 7 entries, one for each color of the rainbow (hence TT's clever banner design. As per usual I love her font choices here.)

My entries 1 - 7.  I was delighted when both 6 and 7 vied with one another in the Best Crop tiebreaker, but genuinely surprised that 7 led by a 2-1 margin. I would have voted for the vamp!Buffy icon myself.  Shows you what I know.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite: Vote for the best of the best out of 32 entries in Challenge 128 "Shades of Grey". Never mind that I haven't voted yet because I'm still making up my mind. (Did I mention there were 32 entries?) I've had a love affair with black and white photography going back decades, so this challenge is particularly pleasing to me - and what a stellar array of entries! (32, count 'em, 32.) Deadline for voting is sometime tomorrow (10/20) so don't delay on this one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy: The banner poll for Round 18, celebrating the comm's 10th Anniversary, is up! (10 years? Can you dig that?) 16 wonderous entries to choose from. Oh such pretty, pretty things to choose from....! Fortunately you have about a week before the poll is up per [livejournal.com profile] teragramm - and can we have a big round of applause for her work on the comm as the Ambassador of Art? But that said, don't wait around until the last minute and then find yourself out of the loop, ok?  (Did I mention it's the 10th Anniversary?)
This banner poll makes me wish there were a friendly, comfy forum where folks could get together and talk about the banners or about making fanart in general - how they were made, the artists' thought processes, the thought processes of voters and constructive critiques. I'm genuinely curious about all of these things and I love to learn from other people. But I know that's difficult to impossible because - 1) I know from personal experience that giving and receiving constructive criticism is a tricksy thing and too few people are versed in the art; leading to the 2) ugly, ugly implosions 3) potential for hurt feelings all around, and finally  4) a lot of our reactions to visual arts are emotional, not intellectual, and fall along the lines of "...but I know what I like."
Thoughts, Gentle Reader?
**********************************
[livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20: Deadline for Round 13 is extended to Thursday, Oct 22. So if you have a last-minute jones to jump in, here's your chance. This is a very good thing because [livejournal.com profile] bangel_4e is back in the game and I wanna see her Buffy claim - and [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen's Willow claim. (For once I don't need an extension because I actually finished before the deadline - I think that's a first for me? Never mind that I pulled a few all-nighters *does exhausted happy dance*)
@@@@@@@@@@@@
If you haven't already voted in the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards, you have until October 31st to do so! The list of nominees is long and illustrious and I WOULD NOT wait until the last minute if I were you.
And far be it from me to tell anyone what to vote for but I am more than happy to make suggestions and thus make your life easier (all of the below are safe for general audiences). The below list doesn't reflect everything I voted for by any means; these are simply some of my favorites.
Answering Prayers - [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Gabrielle) If you haven't discovered this story yet, you really do owe it to yourself.
Ipseity and Proud Trophies - [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr
The Girls in Question - TigerDragon (AO3)
The Sound You Found For Me - [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15
red turns into green turns into yellow - lionheartedgirl (AO3)
In a Corner of My Soul - [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix
Beautiful Butterflies - [livejournal.com profile] kikimay
Flight Patterns - [livejournal.com profile] eurydice72
Giles and the Mountain - [livejournal.com profile] rebcake
Undertow - faithtastic (AO3)
Somewhere Hot and Sharp and Shimmering - [livejournal.com profile] aliceinkinkland
Tricks are for Magicians - [livejournal.com profile] snogged
And now that you've immersed to overflowing in drama & angst here's some pure, unadulterated comedic fun:
Dirty Deeds - Imrryr (AO3)
blindr dot com, or, the importance of coconut-milk lattes to long-term success - antennapedia (AO3) I don't know this author, I don't ship B/G but this AU take is NOT to be missed.
Pretty much anything by the above-named authors, and also [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni, [livejournal.com profile] rahirah, [livejournal.com profile] the_moonmoth and [livejournal.com profile] feliciacraft. My apologies to anyone I've overlooked or forgotten here.
Entries for [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 127 "Close Crop" due Sunday October 4th 3pm EST.  There are 25 gorgeous entries so far, but more are always welcome. And in case you're wondering, the icons do not have to be close-ups of faces, although the examples and most of the entries are; they can be close-ups of anything.
Entries for [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 54 "Roy G Biv" due Friday Oct 9th midnight at your respective timezones. According to [livejournal.com profile] starry_night there are 21 entries so far but again, the more the merrier!
Entries for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy Round 19 Banner competition due Sunday Oct 11 midnight PST. The theme this 10th anniversary round is "Look Both Ways".
Entries for [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 13 due Monday Oct 19 midnight at your time zone. Sign ups are open until then; themes posted here.
And finally - the brilliant beyond belief* [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 created a "multi-fandom" Gods and Monsters ficathon and I'm calling it ongoing because there are tons of great prompts and new ones being added constantly; so fill a prompt with a fic or artwork, and check out the works of art on the masterlist.
Gods & Monsters ficathon
[click on the picture]
If you don't believe my "brilliant beyond belief" description then please read her Buffyverse/Doctor Who crossover fic (death) for my birthday. Dawn is the Tardis. Dawn slides under and then there are hands on her chest and water spilling up her throat and for a moment Dawn is as big as the room and spreading further outward, as far as she can reach. (I fear Lucy might think I haven't read it because I didn't comment but oh goodness, I have. Or rather I didn't read it, I made it part of my life because her prose slides under my skin as easily as Dawn submerges herself beneath the water.)  If "I'm not familiar with fandom X" is worrying to you, don't let it put you off; I haven't seen any of the new Who series myself although I'm vaguely aware of the players. (Seven and Ace were my Doctor and companion, when I was in college and introduced to the series.)
* Entries for [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 119 "Color Coded" due Sunday, June 14th 3pm EST. Check out the specific challenge rules here.      Only three folks have submitted entries thus far, so more are welcome. Congratulations to the winners of Round 118 "Ultron" [livejournal.com profile] naive_astronaut, [livejournal.com profile] fassy, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri and [livejournal.com profile] sietepecados; the vintage look of [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri's fantastic 3rd place winner provided the inspiration for the awards banners; but I also love the rich coloring of [livejournal.com profile] naive_astronaut's interpretation of the same character, and the warm glow of [livejournal.com profile] fassy's winner.
The Black Widow image was my favorite to play with; the Thor and Jeremy Renner ones (I can't be fussed to look up the character's name) were the most difficult. (At the last minute I noticed Renner's hand sticking out of his belt in such a way that his thumb looked like...well, like another part of his anatomy altogether.)
* Deadline for [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 46 "Free For All" has been postponed to next Friday due to a complete and abject lack any entries whatsoever. The new deadline is Friday June 19th, midnight at your respective time zones.
* Icon sets for Round 10 for [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 are due Wednesday June 17th and - I have four out of 20. Maybe. Definitely three...Oh, who am I kidding? I see an extension in my future. As a reminder, the sign-up period is open the entire time so if you haven't entered yet but have a hankerin', it's not too late. In the meantime, scroll down the comm's site and check out the wonderful sets that have already been submitted by [livejournal.com profile] teragramm, [livejournal.com profile] snogged, [livejournal.com profile] killing_kurare, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri,  and [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen.
* Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20, and with sincere apologies for my tardiness on this account: THANK YOU to everyone who participated in Round 9 as artists and/or voters, THANK YOU to everyone who voted for my work and THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] starry_night for the beautiful awards banners! Also check out the lovely banners for [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri's winning entries here.  I love that Starry gave me Buffy and Joyce -  the Summers women are ever so much on my mind lately, thanks to an able assist from [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip's astonishing fic Answering Prayers.
* [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 45, "Potentials" (focusing on the Potential Slayers), entry deadline has been EXTENDED 24 hours to May 30th Midnight at your time zone. (or basically, through today, Saturday).
* [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 118, "Age of Ultron", is a "provided caps" challenge. Check out [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri's, [livejournal.com profile] fassy's and [livejournal.com profile] naive_astronaut's wonderful entries here here, and here; leave feedback, and/or add your own entry icons. Deadline Sunday May 31st 3pm EST.
Yeah, I'm trying to cover all my bases here.
THANK YOU to everyone who voted for my work at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 44 and congratulations to the other winners [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri and new-to-the-comm participant [livejournal.com profile] muirthemne. (I just checked out her Gemma Arterton icon set for [livejournal.com profile] females20in20 and holy sweet potato pie, is it gorgeous work. And I don't even know who the heck Gemma Arterton is. I don't care who Gemma Arterton is. Icons - pretty!)
WInners banners will be up shortly but THANK YOU very much for the 2nd Place, Best Crop and Best Color honors!  This is my FIRST Best Color award in Slayerstillness!
1. 2. 3.
Best Color and 2nd Place/Best Crop winners, respectively, plus a personalized version.
At the beginning of the year I set a goal - I wanted to two placements I hadn't won yet, First and Best Color. Now I've earned both and - what now?
Keep improving, especially in terms of image clarity; try to get a handle on Photoshope Elements (my sweetie, who had mastered full PS before our previous computer burnt in the apartment fire, hates it. But I know other folks around here who love it and do amazing things with it.) Post my backlog of banners, including fanfiction artwork for ; and create new ones. Keep trying for an award at the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards. (Yes, I actually do want that. Call me selfish.) And keep promoting, pimping and sharing the love for all fandom creativity as enthusiastically as I can.  Speaking of which:
** There are TIEBREAKER votes that need attending at [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 for Round 9 - five to be exact, thanks to the fact that people came and voted and we had 27-28 votes cast. I think that may be a record for the comm? At the high end, certainly.  (I won't stop to reflect here on "only 25 people?" and focus instead on the "25 people, yay!") Thank you to everyone who came out and voted thus far!
The ties are Blood, Close Crop+2, Category Set, Cat Icons 3rd place and AC icons 3rd place; so make sure you click on all FIVE buttons individually.  I can't vote this time around because - I'm nominated in all five rounds. (This is no state secret; if you're reading this you know which work is mine and furthermore, if you click "View Answers" you'll see that's what I put there.)  So YOU, my dear Gentle Readers, YOU must sally forth and vote on my behalf. Voting is up for 48 hours or until ties are broken.
Recently [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper said she was taking a page from my book and promoted icontest voting specifically [livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric and [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness. I have to admit I had already stolen that book from [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip, who tirelessly promotes fandom activity of all sorts; but I'm very glad to be part of the chain. Shall we call it a library book and simply pass it around?
[livejournal.com profile] tempertemper also made a wonderful point about supporting icon/art communities that I think can't be said often enough. There are so many people in this fandom and so few voting at art competitions. As a visual artist I of course vote at fiction contests but I think writers oftentimes feel shy or uncertain about voting in art contests. Maybe a grade school teacher made a cruel remark about one's abilities. Maybe one has heard one too many "experts" insist that you have to have a particular sort of education in order to be able to "understand" art. This really shouldn't be so - art belongs to everyone and we all live, breathe, take in visual images every day. We are all incredibly sophisticated and well-educated simply by dint of exposure.
So in that spirit, here are some worthy art challenges in need of your vote:
**   [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 43 "Helpless" Wonderful work and one of my favorite buffyverse episodes - how do the entries end up so often looking go great and of a piece with one another as a group? I'm side-eyeing at least one or two in a "I don't know who made this but back off because I WANT this one" kind of way. *lol*
** [livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric Challenge 200  "Working for the Weekend" I really have to thank [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper for bringing this one back to my attention. Some of my first awards were in this comm but I have not participated in a while, and have been very remiss in terms of voting and promoting it.  This comm is also one of the most overlooked in terms of participation overall, which is a shame.
** [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 116 "Spring Time" My love of the sepias and desaturated tones is well-known but it's nice to try something different and really welcome springtime in bright, light tones;  the really interesting challenge is to come up with something "pretty and light" that also carries emotional weight. It's been a long, hard winter this year, hasn't it?
Finally, speaking of springtime, congratulations to all the winners of  Round 68 of [livejournal.com profile] character20n20. [livejournal.com profile] setentpet asked meto make banners for those who had requested it: [livejournal.com profile] roseemrys, [livejournal.com profile] punk4life1315 and [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen, and the gorgeous clear, springtime colors and the change of season inspired the colors and design of my banners. I indulged myself in a tie for Banner Maker's Choice: [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen and [livejournal.com profile] x_lostinthesun. Check them out here.  I used a photograph I took in 2013 of roses in my landlord's yard as the base.
So there were a total of three - count 'em, 3 - participants with 23 total entries for Challenge 37. VOTING DEADLINE IS TONIGHT MINDNIGHT TUESDAY DEC 23rd.
[livejournal.com profile] starry_night says that those 3 contributors may recuse themselves from voting, but I could not in good conscience ask other folks to vote if didn't myself; if I didn't promote these contests that would be another matter. This is NOT to be read as pressure or disapproval of other entrants' choices. Declining to vote because you don't feel you can be objective is a perfectly legitimate and sensible reason to decline from voting, and preferable to the more common opposite stance.
In fact I will defend to the death the right for anyone to say "I don't think I can cast an honest vote here so I'd rather not."  It's far preferable to the more common and opposite stance "I'm going to vote for my friends because they're my friends!" Not that I never ever did that *shifty eyes*. There was that one time: "This person's work has gotten no votes? Zip, zilch, nada, not one? Really? The heck with that."  Which, now that I think about it, kind of makes it sound like a pity f--k except, not as much fun - but with zero chance of contracting (unfunny) syphilis or other nasties. So it all evens out in the wash.
But to be honest, I didn't make my entry icons with prizes in mind, although I'll never refuse the honors of my peers and pretty banners to go with. I made these in a dig-down-deep frenzy after [livejournal.com profile] pickamix's (Megan's) death, to distract myself, to keep from thinking about things, to avoid mopping the kitchen floor.  Not that it worked that way, exactly; I kept thinking "would Megan like this one? Or this one?" And "Oh, here's one I started right at the beginning of the month and was going to show her because I made it with her in mind and then...never mind."
I still haven't mopped the kitchen floor however so, yay for procrastination?
I was going to hold a couple back for the current challenge on another icontest site I just discovered, [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite . The winning entries in past challenges have been gorgeous and intimidating and the effects many people achieve are beyond my current skillset and/or tools; but [livejournal.com profile] rua1412 has been wonderfully encouraging on that account.
Still, I wanted to share this batch of icons with my friends. With the people reading this post right now, who read my posts regularly, who've been supportive and encourage of my newfound art "career", been with me through the housefire of 2014, the job loss of 2014, who I've laughed and cried and mourned with. As a way of showing off and saying Hey, look what I can do now and see how far I've come because I learned from you. You've been a part of that, you've inspired me, taught me. If I'm a better artist, it's because of you.
And someday I might just be able to remove the quote marks from around "career".
[livejournal.com profile] b_verse_pub, "an oddly polite Buffyverse hangout"for polite and friendly discussion of the Buffyverse (no flames, no rudeness, and no trolls, open to all (and check out the amazing pub graphics)
and [livejournal.com profile] secret_slaying, an anonymous BtVS/AtS TW challenge/awards comm that accepts work in all media (text, images, videos) made specifically for the challenge. Round 1 prompts are up and due December 15. Guidelines and prompts here, detailed rules are here ; incredible graphics also by [livejournal.com profile] pickamix and [livejournal.com profile] shaketheangel. (LOVE the banner that looks like a cork push-pin board.) Like icontests such as[livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric, the entries will be voted on anonymously, unlike any contest I've seen so far, (fr'instance the SunnyD Memorial Fanfiction awards, etc) works in all media are accepted, so check it out!
And speaking of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards and [livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric.......  (How did you know I'd work them in somewhere?)
 * Voting open at Round 30 of Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards until NOVEMBER 30th; list of worthy nominees for your consideration here and the Rules here.  Full disclosure: I'm still combing through the awesome stories; it's a great opportunity as always to check out fics I might have missed otherwise. Or have been tripping over for months and never got around to reading and how the heck did that happen, I wonder to myself?
* Vote for your favorite 3 icons out of 11 fab entries at [livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric Challenge 187, then get your entries ready for Challenge 188: The Love You Save May Be Your Own by Etta James (the Lioness!  A little bit of Etta makes everything betta.)
*  Vote now at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 35 Least Favorite Eps challenge for 1st and 2nd place (no 3rd place this round) plus Best Crop, Colour and Most Creative.  I have a ton of admiration for fanartists who can take an episode (or character) they hate and not only spend quality time with it but turn it into gold, as the 11 entries this round are.
Then prep your entries for Challenge 36 "Ye Olde Vampyre Gang" dedicated to flashbacks of the Fanged Four pre-Sunnydale. [livejournal.com profile] starry_night helpfully provided a list of all btvs & ats episodes with fanged four flashbacks plus some sample caps to choose from. I'm expecting awesomeness to the nth degree.
* The deadline for Round 5 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 has been extended until midnight, Tuesday, November 11 - THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] starry_night! At the moment only two folks including myself have not submitted our sets - but this also means that anyone who wants to jump in at the last minute, there's still a chance!  I know there are folks who know how to use four days more wisely and productively than I know how to use an entire month. That's just plain truth.
* The deadline has also been extended for [livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric Challenge 187 "We are Fine" (Sharon van Etten) to midnight. Friday Nov 14, thank you [livejournal.com profile] dragonydreams:   It's okay to feel / Everything is real / Nothing left to steal / Cause we're alright / We're alright
I'd say "I'm thinking late seasons btvs but that's my automatic default mode anyway; the challenge for me is getting myself to look elsewhere.
* [livejournal.com profile] dragonydreams and [livejournal.com profile] rua1412 have announced a brand new icontest comm: [livejournal.com profile] comicsontv_ic -  a new icon challenge community, for all your favorite live action comic book shows!  Check out the rules, the profile and have fun!  I don't read comics but for those who do, it's a fun idea and I look forward to seeing the entries. (And also, I just really wanted an excuse to use this nifty gif they made for the comm. COBIE SMULDER FTW!)
ETA: I have no idea how Ms Smulders actually reacted to the finale of HIMYM but in my mind, it looked something like this. Anyone else?
** Pirate Bride [livejournal.com profile] snogged returns to the world of fanart after an extended hiatus with this: "Mr Gunn Will See You Now" ("Fifty Shades of Gunn") a Gunn/Willow banner that is incredibly erotic.  To call it "yummy" almost sounds dismissive; "perfectly scrumptious" works better. And yet, it's pretty much worksafe. (Unless a pretty lady in lingerie and a bare leg is a no-no in your office. Or implied interracial shipping. Or looking at fanart or anything not related to work and really, is this the kind of workplace you want to be in?) I've never considered that pairing but looking at her banner it suddenly seems perfectly right. Where's the faction for this ship? And, tell me again why m'lady has been away from fanart and denied us these lovelies for so long?
** Working in the Key of Light: Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] pickamix, who started things off by giving all of us a gift: "Light Willow".  A total turnaround aesthetically from a Mistress of the Dark Art(works): astonishing, unexpected and gorgeous. I'm kind of beyond words here because everything about it could have been, in lesser, hands, cliche - the butterfly wing texture; in her sure hands, nothing here is cliche, all of it is absolutely, meltingly lovely. It was the second thing to greet my eyes Sunday morning, after a proper cup of tea, and I began to tear up. Then I simply sat with it, studied it, took it all in - the way Willow emerges from the light, the way the texures wrap around her, embrace her. I could go on all day about it.
****
What unites these two artworks in my mind is their shared elegance: visually clean, uncluttered, nothing out of place. Simplicity of composition that belies the work that surely went into making both of these. Both of these have room to breathe and yet the composition in each one directs your eye exactly where the artists want it to be. You can roam around, you can go deeper (I can study these for quite some time to suss out the subtle, almost hidden layers), but your eye is not likely to fall off the canvas. That takes a sureness of touch that comes with talent, yes, but also intellegence and conscious practice of the craft. There's no way around it.
The presence of negative space in both goes a long way towards achieving that elegance; and this is a quality I need to study and learn from. My sweetie once described my writing as "too much velvet" for her taste.  Too many adjectives, too much description, too much verbiage in general.  And I find myself doing the same thing with artwork, especially now that I'm discovering layers and textures and oh boy is it easy to fill up the spaces and just because I can doesn't mean I should. Knowwhatimean?
****
Yesterday I thought to myself that if I were a fic author and received either of these artworks as a banner to go with a story I'd die of happiness, aka jump up and down and grin and hug myself uncontrollably. Silently, in my chair, so only I would know. (Ok, the grinning and hugging would actually happen. The jumping would be entirely mental but it would be intense.)THEN I'd show them off and say "Look what I got, y'all!"
But of course, I'm not not a fiction author, and not much of a writer at all, currently....
And then LOOK WHAT I GOT, Y'ALL!
"....yellow is the color of intellectual energy, positivity, but also jealousy and illness and in the yellow shirt there are birds flying (freedom) except that you go on and see the shape of the knife buried in the flesh and all the blood spilling. It's broken freedom and innocence lost...."
[livejournal.com profile] kikimay not only snagged my "There Once was a Girl" icon for her default icon, which is an honor all by itself; she wrote an analysis/interpretation of it! MY ARTWORK HAS BEEN META'D! And of course her commentary is as intelligent, concise and elegant as her prose. I always imagined I'd be writing the meta about someone else's work, never the other way around. Eventually I decided I wanted to provide the pictures to compliment for other people's words, instead of asking other people to provide them for me. (And at that point I knew [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip would be the first second recipient. it had to be her. ETA: [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 was actually the first person I made a banner for. Mind like a sieve over here.)
Now Kiki has provided the words to compliment my picture and so it goes. And this is addition to the honor of a Mod's Choice Award at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness. The little icon that could.
I died of happiness....
...but then I came right away back because I've got to finish my set for Round 4 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20, which is due Sept 27th. Have you seen the awesome entries so far by [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] pickamix, snowpuppies, [livejournal.com profile] teragramm, [livejournal.com profile] killing_kurare, and [livejournal.com profile] oh_cheezit? Plus I needed to cast my vote on the current challenge of [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness, which I missed the boat on entering; therefore, doubly important that I participate as voter.
It's nice when we the artists vote for one another but there ARE MORE THAN 15 PEOPLE IN THIS FANDOM. I know there are. And if you can't or don't want to make icons, by all means vote. Your opinions count and don't let "Well I don't know anything about art" nonsense (because of some stupid thing your parents or your fifth grade teacher told you as a child) hold you back. YES YOU DO KNOW ABOUT ART. Of course you do! You're surrounded with it, you've taken it in your entire life. It's no different to voting in the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards even if you haven't written any works of fiction yourself.
My sweetie has a classmate in art college ten years ago who was a wonderful artist (pastel was her preferred medium and she could make a pastel painting look like it was done in oils), and just the sweetest person imaginable. One of their professors told her in class, in front of everyone, that she "lacked artistic intelligence".  Need I describe my feelings towards this arrogant jackass in minute detail or can you just pick up the vibe of my loathing?
We all have "artistic intelligence". We just need safe space to practice it and express it, as artists and appreciators. (Without people to appreciate, there is no point!) I can say without hesitation that participating in icontests, and thanks to the wonderful community of folks here, I've been pushed farther and faster just the last six months than I could have imagined possible. And I haven't even begun to skim the surface of what's possible.
But I've gone on long enough, Gentle Reader: goest thou and vote, create, offer feedback and share the love - do your part to keep this fandom alive and lively. What medium of expression have you not explored, or are just beginning to? What holds you back? What ideas do you have for bringing new excitement to this fandom and what about it continues to excite you and keeps you interested?
norestforthewickednomineebuttonbyangelus2hot
The nomination period for Round 11 of the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards is OPEN through August 1st -  and I know this because a dear, precious little bird informed me that she had nominated two of my artworks: Prodigal Daughter in "Under Your Spell (Best Banner)" and "Guess Who? (Let a Smile be Your Umbrella - Vamp Willow)" icon from Round 2 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 in "Something to Sing About" (Best Icon)!
And someone else (I know not who) nominated my poster** for [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1's fic "Conclusive Etymology of a Summers" in the Banner category!
WOW! and THANK YOU!
I'll let my first benefactor reveal themselves publicly only if they wish, but I know - and I like knowing. In the second case, I have a short-list of suspects but nothing definitive, so my gratitude rides a warm embrace through the air to Whomever-You-May-Be.
I'm just - WOW. I never expected this.  In the art categories? SERIOUSLY?
Two years ago if anyone had told me I'd be nominated in any awards for fanart, not meta or even fiction category, my reaction would have looked something like this:
Then like this:
And then asked what the real punchline was. Because I was going to be all writerly and, you know, write meta and stuff. My sweetie is/was the "visual artist" as a painter and sculptor; that's her territory, not mine. She's the "artist" in the family.  Or that was the idea anyway. Making fanart wasn't even on my radar. (I hadn't even made a single icon since I'd wandered away from Moulin Rouge fandom a few years ago.) So this feels strange and a little surreal, in the best possible way.
It's also sweet because the nominations are coming from people whose work I respect and admire so much, in a fandom filled with amazing artists; (and because RL has been a bit on the sucky side lately. 'nuff said.) This is just a lovely surprise all around. THANK YOU again to the souls who nominated me and to everyone here who has welcomed me so warmly and openly, and supported me with friendship, encouragement, advice and tutoring.
These are happy tears:
REALLY.
An extra-special thank you to [livejournal.com profile] kwritten, whose icons I so admire for their layered delicacy, for mentioning one day, off-handedly that she used ipiccy and had I ever heard of it?  No I had not - but my work took a huge leap forward when I started playing with it. I know gimp and PS are more sophisticated and I will end up using one or the other no doubt, but ipiccy is free, user-friendly and similar enough to programs I've used before to transition away from Photobucket.
****
Three things I love about the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards (among many many things):
1)  They have categories in Art, Music Video AND in Fiction.  This is the only award I know of in this fandom that does.
2) The winners are decided by judges (the "Inner Workings" post is a great read, check it out) rather than popular vote. Not to diss one or the other but there is definitely room for both types.
3) Moderators [livejournal.com profile] angelus2hot and [livejournal.com profile] spankedbyspike are all-around wonderful human being and ever gracious. (Which has been true of every admin and mod I've encountered since coming to this fandom and to LJ, to be honest. You folks are a rare breed and deserve many kudos for your work.)
The nomination period ENDS AUGUST 1st 25th - and I'm noticing a lot of empty spaces on the Nominee list. Remember that there is no limit to the nominations they accept in any category (unless it gets ridiculous, knowwhatimean?), a person can be nom'd up to twice in any category writers can only be nomm'd once per category, visual artists/vidders can be nomm'd twice per category *** (not including collaborative work) and DID I MENTION THE NOMINATION PERIOD ENDS SOON AND LOTS OF EMPTY SPACES ON THE LIST?  You know what to do, Gentle Reader  - make somebody happy - just make sure you real the Rules and Past Winners list first. If you're not certain, just ask the always helpful mods!
Along those lines, the mods not only welcome but encourage self-nomination. I did that last year with my Ted meta, which felt a little embarrassing at first but I got a pretty Runner-Up banner, and a few people saw my meta who might not have otherwise. Aside from the kudos and encouragement this is the point: to give people a chance to see, watch and read something that mightn't have crossed their paths otherwise. Sharing is Caring!
** I know "banner" is used for just about everything that ain't nailed down when it comes to fanart, but I like the term "poster". PS: the Etymology poster I swore I would always love instead of just seeing the flaws ten years down the road? Two months later, I'm already seeing the flaws and what I woulda/coulda/shoulda have done better. Durn it.
***ETA: [livejournal.com profile] angelus2hot gently corrected my errors re: nominating period and number of noms per category: a masterclass in graciousness, that's what I'm talking about.
red_satin_doll: (Smile)
1) Thanking: My personal Miss Psycho Pep Squad [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip. For reasons. For everything.
Everyone who has helped me learn how to improve my art skillz: [livejournal.com profile] chasingdemons and [livejournal.com profile] comlodge, [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen, [livejournal.com profile] rua1412, [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn, and [livejournal.com profile] kwritten for introducing me to ipiccy in the first place. (If I've forgotten anyone please forgive me.) Ok, I did some thankin' yesterday but it bears repeating. The sheer GENEROSITY of folks in this fandom is overwhelming. My real life has been all kinds of suckitude; being here on LJ, diving into making art (aka keeping myself distracted) has been my bliss.Comlodge, [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike, and Chasingdemons all checked out ipiccy to make comparisons with gimp/PS and give me their reactions.
**
2) Pimpage happens here: My homegirl [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn made me an incredible gift: a Buffy Summers fanmix, with musical tracks by Coldplay, Florence Welch, Imogene Heap, Regina Spektor, Metric and more;  with incredible "album cover" art. I'm listening to it right now for the umpteenth time - Rilo Kiley's heartbreaker "A Better Son/Daughter" as a matter of fact. Perfect song for Buffy - keep fighting, keep smiling, keep hauling that load even if it kills you (and it certainly will). The entire mix is everything Buffy is - brave, frightened, loving, determined, uncertain, strong  -  everything all of us are: human. (Speaking of, "Human" by the Cinematics puts me in mind of Spike, actually, but that may be partly because of the lead male vocals. "I've been breaking my back with the weight of your heart." Break my heart now, why don'cha?) I'm not sure what I did to deserve such a wonderful gif but I'm grateful - and already addicted to it.
**
[livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1's "Conclusive Etymology of a Summers" is a lovely and tender portrait of Buffy's relationship with language beyond my ability to do justice with my own words: her wit, her stubborness, her intelligence, her hope; her silence in response to the fears that grip her heart.  This story completely owns my heart, so here's a piece of mine: my first fanfiction poster.
Etymology version 1 (Lucy's favorite)
I am so happy with how this came out. SO happy and proud. As in, close-to-tears-happy. I didn't plan it in advance, it snuck up me while I was working on something else, and just came together with hardly any effort. That's the way it always seems to be. I'm wrestling with fear, self-doubt and sense of failure in my RL, but - I can do this now. I can do this.
[livejournal.com profile] pickamix generously offered suggestions for a more slender font style, which I tried to replicate here;  I love both variations.
Go read Lucy's fic, it's beyond wonderful. Then check out her multi-fandom icons and her other fics, including the delightful Buffyverse/Whoverse crossovers: the sensual "Teaching the Stars how to Set Themselves on Fire" (Dawn/Amy Pond); two Buffy/River Song fics, the funny/sexy "Straight on 'til Morning" and the answer to my request for "more, please" with it's prequel: "Greet Me with Nights and Summer"; Buffy/River Song plus wise, wry Dawn, slightly-befuddled Faith, a shout-out to Tara, badass women with swords and an apocalypse-y setting.  What more could I desire?
**
[livejournal.com profile] kikimay's fics and fanvideo: The epilogue to her post-series Fuffy fic Eros which is incredibly sweet and has a lovely Buffy/Giles scene. Fluffy Fuffy can be hard to get right, but if you've been reading along, Kiki makes sure it's well-earned. Our beloved Slayers deserve a little happiness, oui? (the entire story is rated NC-17 but this chapter is safely teen and up.) Her second fan video, "Bad Habit" takes on a serious subject: the ways that the Buffyverse women punish themselves and "self-mutilate" either literally or symbolically. It's been a while since I've seen a truly meta buffy fanvid that engaged larger social and psychological issues. She says she has plans to make a third video, inspired by "Conclusive Etymology of a Summers". I approve of this plan.
**
[livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy's latest btvs S6 fic, "Building Character" (thank you [livejournal.com profile] kikimay!) that rewrites S6 and Buffy's resurrection in a way that is probably more realistic - and subtly horrifying, or at least extremely ambiguous - than canon. It also builds on a series-wide subtext that becomes text in S5 - the "constructed" or created individual, the "doll" (shades of the Buffybot, April and Dawn). The gang tries to put Buffy together again, however much they think they "know" her, how much is unknown and left blank?
**
Don't forget to vote at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 27, Hair Porn; deadline is midnight tonight, the 8th, in your time zone.  And check out the beautiful [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 entries for two Season 5 episodes by [livejournal.com profile] starry_night[livejournal.com profile] starry_night (Intervention) and [livejournal.com profile] iconsoleander (The Body). Deadline for Round 2 entries is tomorrow, and I'll be able to start my entry post as soon as I get this post up. (The word "gulp" comes to mind.)
**
3) Finally, Wishing [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr a belated Happy Birthday (July 1st.)  She hasn't been active in fandom since last fall, as far as I can tell, so I am also remiss in not dropping her a line because I miss her presence, the conversations and rants about: Spuffy canon vs fanon, fandom, politics, pretty much anything and everything - she brings intelligent, wit, and an independent, iconoclastic, no-nonsense attitude to everything in her sights. And the fic: she's known for her long Spuffy works but excels also at funny, sexy, tender Spuffy ficlets in which both partners in the 'ship are treated with affection and respect. The "it could have been canon" series she wrote for [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends in October is all kinds of wonderful, and includes meta as well as fic. "No Earthly Remains" is something of a departure, focusing on Willow, Faith and Buffy post-Chosen; it stands next to [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's "You're Here, Too?" (Buffy, Anya, Willow) as one of my favorite fics dealing with the friendships of btvs' women, and Buffy's trauma and grief after the fall of Sunnyhell.
ETA: "Conciusive Etymology" poster Nominee for Best Banner in Wicked Awards Round 11:   buffy2
A vague disclaimer is nobody's friend: It goes without saying but just in case: "Don't even think about stealing or defacing my artwork or ye will be plagued by boils and all manner of afflictions".  The Miss Psycho Pep Squad icon is totally snaggable however. Have a nice day!
red_satin_doll: (The Chain)
It's all over but the shouting: Congratulations to all the winners of Round 1 [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 challenge (listed in no particular order): [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] bangel_4e, [livejournal.com profile] oh_cheezit, [livejournal.com profile] rua1412[livejournal.com profile] rua1412, [livejournal.com profile] sweetiepebbles, [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen, and [livejournal.com profile] undeny! And thank you again [livejournal.com profile] bangel_4e for creating this community, doing all the thankless work and making it look easy (and pretty!) and answering my endless silly questions with utmost courtesy and kindness.
You know how these icon challenges are often anonymous? Well guess what, kids? By the time the actual voting rolled around I forgot who the heck made what anyway (except SRQ made the Cordy icons, & [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike made the Spike icons: everything else went into my brain's blender along with the anchovies and came out as sauce).
Not that it matters. If I love you and hug you and make you cookies and set the sun and the moon above you, it doesn't mean I'm also gonna vote for your icons when the time comes because it's the WORK that matters. What does affect my vote is: Do I remember an icon when I look away from the screen? Do I still remember that icon an hour later, a day later? A handful of these icons have lingered in my memory from the moment I first saw them.
How did they do that? is another factor in my voting decisions, I admit; hopefully less so as I become more knowledgeable myself. But I'm more likely to wonder how they did something if the icon itself works for me artistically and emotionally in the first place. In other words, the effects are there for a reason, not just for their own sake. Do they work as icons, as something I would want to actually use for myself? Some of my personal Best in Show icons that didn't get the awards love but deserved to IMHO:
[livejournal.com profile] mercurialdragon's Provided Texture, and AC 4-5. The guy It's hard to find nice Xander icons, let alone genuinely beautiful ones. AC4-5 are genuinely lovely to look at, and the tight crop in AC4 amazes me. But Provided Texture might be the icon in this round that really blew my mind, and certainly was my favorite for the Theme. One of my favorite sequences in the series, Xander's dream in Restless, is given the full meta treatment in 100x100 pixels. Is he looking out a window or in a mirror? Either way he's trapped, and I can feel the flopsweat here. Brava.
Another Xander icon I loved: [livejournal.com profile] undeny's Freshman icons: Earth Tones icon of Xander ("I ask myself, what would Buffy do?") cleverly interprets the theme; the trees look like a pattern on his shirt. And like Mercurialdragon's icons it's lovely to look at, rich blacks, muted tones, high quality image, balanced composition of an image that I rarely see in icons. Also their Strong icon uses effects to simultaneously blur and emphasize Buffy's motion as she whips around, and NS+Mono is just pretty. Plus the odd off-center crop takes a page from Edgar Degas's book - and as it happens it's a damned good book.
federica74's Illyria icons AC2 & AC4,  the latter one most especially. Like [livejournal.com profile] mercurialdragon's PT icon, it's both beautiful and very meta, very emotional (and in the case of the Illyria one, I don't know what's going on because I haven't watched AtS; I don't have prior knowledge to affect my reaction to it.) I find myself once again wondering how they achieved those effects, and I've never seen that "mesh screen" effect (texture?) used in quite that way; once again, perfect balance is achieved in an assymmetrical composition. Lovely, rich, coloration in all of these.
[livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen's Catagory set for Cordy got awards love, but it's her Artist's Choice set that lingers most in my mind. Again, it's conceived as a series and works both as a piece and as individual icons; and there is just something about that sponge-painted effect or, to mix my metaphors, the strawberries and cream-colored overlay (since I don't know when something is a "texture" and something is a "layer", I'll just call it an "overlay" and cover all my bases, m'kay?). It's delicate and feminine and Cordy can be those things too, but she's also Queen C, tough as nails, stronger and smarter than she was willing to let on in Sunnydale.
I want to give [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike's AC4 of Spike from Intervention a shout-out. It's such a brave choice as an icon. The normal default is to choose images that are pretty to look at; certainly that's what I do, and it's easy to do, and fun to play with an image that is pleasurable to look at. I've never tried playing with an image like this one, not sure that I could. It's an awful thing to look at - and demands that I do just that. It's true to the spirit of the show, to what I recognize of real life in it: Yes, this is horrid. But look anyway. Then look again. (You might see a man inside that monster, a powerful witch inside that geek, a hero inside that tiny blond girl. You might find flowers taking seed beneath the shit.)
Taking myself by surprise here: Do I ship Bangel? Nope. (In a not my thing now but I wanted it when I watched it because Buffy wanted him - and yeah I cried when they danced at the Prom and screamed at him in IWRY, the big dope, and no I would never deny her love for any of her lovers, even Riley, so can we just hold hand and sing Kumbaya kind of way while I read Spangel or whatever the heck the W/A ship is called? Coolness.)
Do I love the [livejournal.com profile] bangel_4e's glowing, luminous Bangel AC and Cat sets? Oh yes I do. I have no idea how to achieve that perfect softness without losing image quality or just becomeing "fuzzy". (And how great is that she treats the horror of the dream sequence in Amends in AC5 to the same romantic look as the other images?)  Do I want to snuggle up in Buffy and Angel's embrace in [livejournal.com profile] xlittledreams' Smile and Catagory 4 icons? Yes indeed - and they are very different to each other: IWRY in warm, golden-tones and filled with the promise of comfort with the shadows creeping in around them, Forever in stark and unforgiving black and white, embracing but just barely connecting anymore.
I love these as much as I love [livejournal.com profile] sweetiepebbles' Spuffy Catagory set, especially Cat#2 from End of Days, cut as precisely as a diamond with layers and facets and I can't fathom and crisp detail. Let's hold hands and sing Kumbaya.
Ok, on a more personal note:
Tiny confession and full disclosure #1:   I'm a little disappointed at my own showing. (Is it ok to say that?) But then I'm also still reeling from being laid off and my one income source getting yanked away right at the same time the voting occured. (Gee I don't sound bitter, do I?) so it's very probably the emotions from one got blended into the other. Hey, can we call it a mash-up?
But I'm really proud of the icons I made for this set. Mostly. I pushed myself to try new things, to experiement, to be good enough to stand tall with some amazing and long-experienced artists I admire - to deserve to stand on the same stage and be considered with them, with no embarrassment - and I think I succeeded.  Even with the one or two icons I should have pitched out the window - Blending icon, I'm looking at you - I learned something that will hopefully lead to better image-making next time around. And I met some amazing artists and made some new friends - and got some hugs and strokes. So it's all good.
One thing I didn't learn: why people like what they like and how to judge that. My NS+Mono was one of my most popular icons and one of my least favorites. For reasons. Some of my favorites, Favorite Moment, Provided Texture, Comics, most of the AC ones that I really loved, didn't do as well as I'd have hoped. [livejournal.com profile] comlodge has counselled me to do what I love, rather than try to guess and curry favor with voters. I think this wise advice, indeed. (I'm pretty sure Donald Trump would tell me the exact opposite, which is why he's Donald Trump and I'm not.) Because except for Blended and Cat 4, I wouldn't swap any of these icons out if I had a second chance. (If I actually did have a second chance that might be another story.)
Tiny confession and full disclosure #2: I chose Vamp Willow as my claim for Round 2. And I'm nervous, as in freaked out, really scared I'll make shitty icons. Because I want to do the character and my friends who are Willow (and Vamp Willow) fans justice. And, not make shitty icons. Again - there's a mash up of "my life is uncertain and scary right now for reasons and I'm terrified because I don't know what to do about it" and "I'm more aware than I used to be that my icon-making skilz have a long way to go." All the icons in my user pics that I made and were so very proud of months ago? My beloved Buffy & Dawn in Him icon? Now all I see is flaws - "damnit Sarah's face is all wrong, it's too pixilated, argh!"
Clearly obsessing on this shit is my way of distracting myself from what's really and truly distressing me. And maybe that sort of distraction is not of the good. (But I her nose is STILL wrong on that icon, gosh darn it!)
Now, on to Round 2 - and speaking of which, [livejournal.com profile] oh_cheezit has already posted her Buffy Summers season 4 entries - make the rest of us look like slackers, thank you very much - so check out the pretties!
1) That [livejournal.com profile] otherworldlyric extended it's current icon challenge  #170 for one week (aka, until Friday the 25th) because there was only one entry? Normally I'm begging for extensions on these challenges so I should be all over that, except...the prompt is George Thoroughgood's "Bad to the Bone"and I'm not moved or inspired in any dimension. This is probably another case of "familiarity breeds contempt" - and in this case, possibly testosterone poisoning. I've read the lyrics multiple times trying to find inspiration to subvert it, to remove it from the familiar context - and I only need two consecutive words from the lyrics. Gotta be something I can do with it:
was born
the day
to the
bad to
before I
woman beg
girl squeal
tell ya
Nope, I'm just not feeling it this time around. But maybe some of y'all can find what I'm missing and embarrass me with your brilliance.  (I'll just be over here washing down the aftertaste of testosterone with a bottle of estroge....and a Samuel Smith's organic double chocolate stout for a chaser.)
2) That my my recent post after a longish absence (moving! packing! tired! busy! Excuses: get your red hot excuses!) has over 100 comments in the thread, which is funny and wonderful because I thought no one would respond to it that silly thing. My f'listies are made of awesome. Further proof? Y'all made Vastra and Jenny a part of my life. Victorian interspecies lesbian detectives? Samuri swords and bifurcated tongues? BEHOLD THE AWESOME WHICH IS, WAS, AND EVER SHALL BE.
Either I need to do more polls, or I need to talk about Orphan Black and interspecies lesbians more often. Maybe both. Speaking of OB, did I also mention....
3) ....that I forgot to credit the lovely [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn for encouraging me to watch Orphan Black, which is my New Favorite Thing. Because she said kind and loving words that flattered my soul and she's one of my personal heros and role models - one of my real life Buffy's - so how could I resist? My first reaction to the pilot was "Ringer meets Dollhouse." But much, much better.
4) And that I've only seen the first three episodes of S1 and Tatiana is my New Favorite Actress and Cosima is my New Favorite Character - along with Felix. (Felix is LOVE.) And that Cosima is*BIG SPOILER FOR OB* a lesbian and my heart is EXPLODING WITH JOY. (And OMG what the hell is that - not who, what - at the end of S1 ep 3? the bleached blond who looks like a cross between an anime villain and a prehistoric leviathan? What is this even?)
6) Even BIGGER explosion: kikojutsuka (aka [livejournal.com profile] lanoyee ) linked to a Reddit convo with OB creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, and Graeme said this: "The Cophine relationship, we really loved anyway and to see it get that much support and to see that people thought that it was an important relationship to be on TV made us want to continue it and bolster it. And yeah, why the hell is that? Why do lesbian characters always die in TV? RIP Tara."
Oh fuck YES and THANK YOU FOR GETTING IT, Mr Manson. And thank you for honoring Tara.
Now I've got a serious hankering for some crossover fic.  And hey, speaking of crossover fic...
7) [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 is accepting/filling multi-fandom fic prompts - femmeslash, gen, het, threesomes, you name it - and knocking it OUT OF THE PARK every single time. She has stories for fandoms and characters I'm not at all familiar with, or characters I am but wouldn't ship together otherwise except her writing is so lovely and universal in moods and themes, so evocative/poignant/sexy/funny/yummy that it doesn't matter. I can think of exactly three other times I've experienced that in fanfiction, and the other times were some ten years ago.
8) FYI: when your heart explodes with joy, hardwood floors are a lot easier to clean up than rugs or "vintage" linoleum. Trust.
The last two weeks I've received a sudden and unexpected influx of gifts and blessings here on LJ, and just gotten quite a lot of pleasure out of my participation in this fandom. I've been wanting to acknowledge all the love coming my way and spread it out, but it's hard to put into words. Or rather, words I have by the ton; coherence not so much. So I'm going to try to return and spread the love out all this week, because it's too much for one little post.
1) Buffyverse Top 5 was just a tremendous amount of fun to participate in. [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian and [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo deserve a huge round of applause for being such wonderful hosts, as always; and kudos to everyone who participated with rec lists of their own and/or comments. It was a great party! I remember enjoying myself last year but not to the same degree as this time but I was very new to fandom, didn't know as many people; and was focused on the goal of rec'ing meta because nearly all the other rec lists were focused on fanfic, with emphasis on shippiness.
Thank you [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip, [livejournal.com profile] snogged, [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight, [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike, [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000, [livejournal.com profile] lusciousxander, [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15, [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy, [livejournal.com profile] rebcake, [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix, [livejournal.com profile] endeni for all your lists; and thanks to the artists who keep bringing all of us what you love in any format....
This time around I had a lot of things I wanted to rec in every genre - fic, meta, art, vids - and only had time for a fraction of what I wanted to do. But other folks had the same idea: picspams, podcasts, videos, meta, some folks mixed things up in all forms; a lot of very new to me authors and stories that covered a wide range of the Buffyverse in terms of 'ships, gen, female-centric, etc - something for everyone. All of it very high quality on every level of craft (technique) and art. There's enough there to keep me busy neglecting housework chores for some months to come. And it continued a trend that I've noticed of late: that my fandom circle of aquaintance, friendships, reading habits and tastes have been widening. It keeps things more interesting and fun, and reminds me just how large this fandom really is, and how much variety of people and interests within it.
The "bad news" is that this round is over until the next "Classic Round" starting October 30th. The good news is that gives me plenty of time to procrastinate until the last minute prepare my lists in advance.
(And I hope y'all will forgive me an indulgence: I already mentioned in my last post that [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo surprised me by including one of my own posts from last June in their Top 5 picspam list. What I forgot to mention because it hadn't sunk in quite yet, was that I was keeping company alongside [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies and [livejournal.com profile] comlodge, two of the most amazingly talented artists in this fandom. Are you kidding? I'm still dancing with joy.)
2) While I'm celebrating communities here, I want to give a shout-out to the wonderful editors of the Sunnydale Herald: [livejournal.com profile] rahirah[livejournal.com profile] secondalto, [livejournal.com profile] oni_9, [livejournal.com profile] lynnylou, [livejournal.com profile] gillo, [livejournal.com profile] audela & [livejournal.com profile] menomegirl  continue to prove at least 2-4 times a week that the activity and creativity in this fandom is truly an embarrassment of riches with your . At least 2-3 of the meta I rec'd on Buffyverse Top 5 I found on their lists, not to mention all the meta I wanted to rec but didn't have the time to. (Barb explained to me once how they manage to run and organize it and I still can't wrap my head around the work they do.)
And they've been providing something invaluable: free marketing and PR. Readers I wouldn't have been able to draw on my own, even if it's one person, and I didn't have to lift a finger. I didn't even have to tell anyone I'd written it; it's just there. I've watched my sweetie try to build her art blog and an audience out of whole cloth, without the support of a community or ready-made audience and it is damn hard and frustrating work. So every time I see one of my posts linked there it's another gift just falling into my lap, and I don't think there's any way I can adequately express my gratitude for that except to say "thank you".  (Can I get an "amen", somebody?)
