This post will be updated frequently.  I'm including some examples when possible because a picture is worth a thousand words.

UPDATED 05 July 2016:

TEXTURES:
[livejournal.com profile] colorfilter - Their big 40 pack of icon textures (download link at Facebook here) is still the one I use most often and I haven't begun to scratch the surface of the hundreds of textures within. Also check out the pack of larger 800x600 textures. You can also find the sets posted individually on their journal. I've posted a few more examples of my icons using these textures in the comment thread here.

[livejournal.com profile] texturize - (Many thanks to[livejournal.com profile] teragramm for rec'ing this community) One-stop shopping for anyone interested in creating and sharing textures. Be sure to read the comm's very informative "Bible" (guidelines) before posting or snagging. Most of the artists post links back to their graphics journals or to Deviant Art.

[livejournal.com profile] lookslikerain at [livejournal.com profile] soaked. I've used more of their textures than anyone's except [livejournal.com profile] colorfilter's:

[livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax at [livejournal.com profile] burnedbreads - includes tutorials.  A tremendous variety of textures including soft glow, grunge, frames, abstract and geometric patterns in any one given set. I like their medium (300pixels) square textures for icons.

SCREENCAPS for Buffyverse
[livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness has a list of Screencap Resources for BtVS and AtS, including all the ones I use most frequently; if you know of
any not on the list, send the links to [livejournal.com profile] starry_night. Some of my favorites from the list:

  * Pretty as a Picture complete screencaps for BtVS and AtS plus promo photos for Buf (ETA: 12/21/15 site currently defunct)

  * Bloodqueen has all seven seasons of BtVS complete, is one of my primary sources

  * Leave Me the White by [livejournal.com profile] _jems_  Spuffy-centric so no S1 or S3 caps and the remaining seasons are incomplete; but some of the best quality
caps of the series I've found. (S2 is the most complete with 14 episodes capped.) Includes Dailies for Smashed and Dead Things.
S7 is spread out over three albums including two Miscellaneous albums.

 * Buffy in HD ON Facebook Fan analysis of the problems with Fox's recent "HD remaster", galleries of screencaps, edits, comparisons

 * Shadow of Reflection also has all seven seasons; quality if variable. The early seasons caps compare favorably with
Bloodqueen's; the later seasons are strangely distorted.

 * Screencapped.net WiP; S1-2 of BtVS are complete; plus one file of promo shots from S1 and the screencaps for Bargaining.
Appears to be using a new cleaned-up source for it's caps (the so-called "high deflnition" version.) Has a lot of screenshots that
may not exist elsewhere, but can appear slightly compressed or distorted.

  * The Chosen Two Gallery high-quality promotional and marketing images and magazine shoots of all the major and most of the
minor characters/actors in BtVS, AtS and Firefly.

  * Kiss Them Goodbye Seasons 1 - 2 complete, partial season 3; also appears to be working off newer DVD's or Blu-ray sources but
the images tend to be more pixilated than other sources.

  * promo-pictures on tumblr

  * Buffy Universe and Angel DVD caps

Individual Cast Members Fansite Galleries:
   * Sarah Michelle Gellar France - What it says on the tin. One of my favorite fansite galleries for all things SMG and constantly
updated. Photoshoot albums sometimes identify the magazine and the original photographer.
   * Glamorous SMG - online since 2003, another fairly comprehensive source.
   * Captivating SMG - relatively new (since 2013), it divides the Photoshoot section by years, which few sites do. Galleries for Sarah's other tv
series still incomplete or empty as of this writing.

   *Marc Blucas Source
  * Michelle Trachenberg Web

For other fandoms:
  * All movie/tv caps on Leave Me The White. Extensive collection including Grease, Amelie, Dangerous Liasons, Terminator; Parks & Rec, Veronica Mars etc.
  * Genre Caps HQ screencaps for several fantasy series: Jessica Jones and other Marvel series, Doctor Who (New Who); OUAT, Outlander, etc

OTHER IMAGE SOURCES
* The British Library offers over one million royalty-free digitized images from their vast archives going back to the 17th century.
* The Brooklyn Museum of Art happens to be one of the best art museums I've ever visited. If I had to choose between a visit here

And while you're looking at [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 143 (deadline May 15), check out the entries that have been submitted so far by [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer, and [livejournal.com profile] lookslikerain here, here and here respectively. Everyone is bringing their A-game.

I hope to get something submitted but I'm helping get ready for my sweetie's upcoming exhibition so I may not be able to. Real life gets in the way and all  that jazz. Speaking of which, I apologize for being behind on finishing awards banners for Challenge 142, and also for [livejournal.com profile] episodes20in20 Round 5. They are in the works.  In the meantime congratulations to Challenge 142 winners [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] nmcil12 and [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer (whose technique and artistry are growing by leaps and bounds lately, if I may say so.) And congratulations to Round 5 winners [livejournal.com profile] crucified, [livejournal.com profile] gabby227, and [livejournal.com profile] sandy79!

Last but not least THANK YOU to everyone who voted for my icons at [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 17 and THANK YOU to [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper for the gorgeous little gems of the awards banners she made us! Congratulations to the other winners [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy, [livejournal.com profile] vanishingspirit, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri and [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike!

Seasonal Spuffy Round 20 banner poll HERE; deadline to vote is today, April 27th, 9pm EST (And no, I don't have a dog in the race this time. I'm going to kick back and enjoy being a voter and spectator.) Sign ups for Round 20 are HERE and it's filling up fast.

[livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 17 last chance to weigh on on three tiebreakers.

[livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite still has some ties for Full body challenge 141 so VOTE here if you haven't cast your ballot already. Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite, a few days ago I moped that I missed the "flowery" challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness but WE challenge 142 is giving us a second chance at the theme.
red_satin_doll: (Buffy Helpless A Father's Love TRGM)
And back from my perpetual AWOL-ery....

Tonight is the deadline to vote in Round 17!

Don't forget there are three posts for voting: Themes, Category Sets, and AC Sets;

There are only 14 - 16 votes cast so far in each post (there are always people who miss one, it seems), and for the most part I pretty much agree with how the vote is going; there are no egregious errors, no "wtf, people?"

The one exception is that I am surprised that the Content theme isn't more evenly spread; I thought that was one of the most difficult to decide among. (I confess  I really like [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike's Bangel icon from What's My Line? The "medieval" stained glass background is so richly and intensely colored, in contrast to the relative neutrals of Buffy and Angel's skin, hair and clothes. The dark shadows cutting across Buffy's torso and around the figures give them depth and solidity in contrast to the flat background, but the shadows also link the figures visually to the leading in the stained glass. It's a deceptively simple little icon but there's a lot of "there there" the more I look at it.

And don't even get me started on [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy's beautifully subtle Faith AC set.

Some of of my icons are doing fairly well and I confess that makes me happy; after so many gen icon sets, doing a Buffy set was like a homecoming.  When I was making the icons I had a "concept" for the AC set and put a lot of energy into it, but ironically the Category set, which I spent relatively less time on, is doing better, as it should. I think it came out more interesting and it's one of the better Category sets I've done.
red_satin_doll: (Kendra the Vampire Slayer What's My Line)
Voting for Challenge 66 of [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness is up right NOW - and once again I have been absolutely abysmal at participation lately. (Which is dumb because I have all sorts of flower textures and imagery that I could have drawn on.) But if I didn't enter I can at least vote and encourage y'all to to do the same.

And voting for Round 17 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 is also up NOW, and this one I did participate in, with delays. And I have to say I'm pretty happy with my set. It's not showy, the icons are more "naturalistic" but I'm happy with how they came out. But I think "naturalistic" is a pretty good description of the entries overall by [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer, [livejournal.com profile] vanishingspirit and [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy .The icons are "subtle" and "unshowy" in the best way, because it really forced me to stop and look at them, to pay attention to the details. And I love that. There's a lot of "there there" but you're not being stabbed in the eye with it.  No desperate "Look at me, look at me!" but rather an assured, "Oh, there you are. Yes, come in."

Don't forget there are three separate voting posts: 10 THEMES, CATEGORY SETS, and ARTISTS CHOICE SET

Question: Is it weird that I am willing to pimp the heck out of voting for icontests here (even ones I don't participate in) but never got onto LJ once to promote voting for La'Porsha Renae in American Idol?  I did that on facebook and it was like, I wanted to keep my fandoms separate? Or - I don't know. It was a learning experience. I never watched the show before and thank god it's over, I wouldn't want to do that again. Sheesh. The partisanship, the anger, the racial and sexual slurs, the nonsensical rationalizations...it all made buffyverse fan wars feel like a cakewalk in comparison.

PS to
[livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip : I see you over there voting!  *lol*
red_satin_doll: (Kendra the Vampire Slayer What's My Line)
Yes, there are ties that need to be broken at [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite but  [livejournal.com profile] setentpet has cleverly decided not to reveal what they are. She's simply requesting more people vote at the original post, which only heightens the suspense in my opinion.  Well played, indeed. Now goest thou and vote. ASAP.

Speaking of voting, only 13 ballots have been cast at Round 16 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20, which is kind of sad. Do you understand what that means? Never mind the long hours spent slaving over a hot stove in front of a computer making icons, that means only 13 or so people have appreciated [livejournal.com profile] bangel_4e's super-adorable Lorne banners for the round, and that just ain't right!

So I'll make it easy for you to join in the fun:   THEMES       CATEGORY ICONS & SETS   ARTISTS' CHOICE ICONS & SETS

BTW, the rules forbid me from promoting my own work so I wouldn't and won't. However there is nothing to technically forbid me from saying that Set #1 in the AC sets deserves more looks than it's gotten. And I don't know the artist all that well beyond a few exchanges here on LJ and I won't even say their name. I just think it's a nifty set. And this is NOT to take anything away from any of the other wonderful sets. The rest of the competition?  I'm pretty cool with so far. I'd always like to do better than I'm doing but hopefully that will just push me to improve. (Once again I feel I've hit that "brick wall" stage of things. Or maybe I just keep running into different parts of the same damn wall.)

Weirdly enough, I am actually allowed to promote my own work when it comes to voting for Viewer's Choice at the [livejournal.com profile] rwsawards but I really haven't because...I like my own poster for "Closure" and am thrilled that it was nominated, but [livejournal.com profile] boiiko and Restfield's (aka [livejournal.com profile] rbfvid) entries deserve to be in the lead. Both of those posters are the total package in terms of aesthetic and technical merit.

I have no opinion to offfer on the Reader's Choice section - there is a list of terrific work, many by people I know, love and respect, and really not a bad one in the bunch. So you're on your own there. But do vote while you have the time. It takes but a minute.
red_satin_doll: (Buffy Casablanca Poster v1 poppy wreath)
The memorably named Voyeur and Hairy Eyeball categories of [livejournal.com profile] rwsawards are open NOW. These are the only two categories of RWSA that are voted on by the readers/viewers. My poster for [livejournal.com profile] herself_nyc's "Closure" is one of the nominees but all the nominees are amazing. Go vote and make your favorite artist and author happy!

red_satin_doll: (Max Max Furiosa b/w anguish blend)
Feb 3rd is the deadline to send nominations to [livejournal.com profile] darkgoddessgege for Round 11 of  the [livejournal.com profile] rwsawards, so it's your last chance to nominate your favorite authors and artists in buffyverse and SPN fandom.  Check out the list of current nominees here.

I noticed that at the moment there is only nomination in the "My Marker" (best beta) category, [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh. It's possible that there are other nominations pending in that category but if you have a muse who has shaped your work to be the best it can be, by all means give them a little love with a nomination. Betas are unsung heros, serving as muses, editors, collaborators, teachers, sounding boards, task masters and selection committees.

I wanted to nominate [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip in this category for all the work she does as a beta for my icons and artwork, but she has already maxed out on the number of nominations she can receive. As well she should. But it's worth pointing out that art betas are just as eligible to be nominated in this category as writing betas. (And yes, I have confirmed that with [livejournal.com profile] darkgoddessgege.) I am well-nigh certain that I'm not the only person using a beta-muse for help with my artwork because all artists (visual artists, writers, etc) need feedback. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Anyone who knows [livejournal.com profile] teragramm knows what a wonderful, talented artist and supportive, all around nice person she is, and so the news that she's been named the new mod at [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite is very happy news because I can't think of anyone better!  Let's join [livejournal.com profile] setentpet in giving [livejournal.com profile] teragramm our best wishes!

Courtesy of the voters at Round 15 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20, and the splendidly talented [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper who outdid herself in her usual brilliant way. Thank you so much! I think my icons look the best they ever have in their lovely frames; the Light Texture and Close Crop icon really pop, and I can actually appreciate how nice the Category icons look as a set in ways I couldn't before. And I love the sly meta nod to the Category theme challenge (Silver and Gold) in the conception and execution.

Banner by tempertemper january 2016

This is why I enjoy winning because I get pretty pretty banners (and feedback and strokes); it's entirely pavlovian and I honestly don't care as much as I should. Even though I know it's probably childish of me. I really have never understood the folks who win at icontests and then don't ask for banners because they don't need them. You guys are better people than me, honestly. I'm shallow. Sue me.

And while I have your attention:

[livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness 26 entries in Challenge 61, "Touch Me"; voting deadline Tuesday Feb 2.

[livejournal.com profile] actress_ic has 28 entries in the very cool "vintage" theme of Challenge 111. Voting open until Thursday Feb 4.

GOEST THOU AND VOTE!
red_satin_doll: (Willow Tough Love post-impressionist)
Thank you VERY MUCH to everyone who voted in [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 15!  I won Close Crop, Light Texture, and 3rd Place Category Set.  Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] midnightisclose!

Congratulations to the winners at [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 135 : [livejournal.com profile] nadya149, [livejournal.com profile] dixon, [livejournal.com profile] harlequinss_s, [livejournal.com profile] hermionesparkle, [livejournal.com profile] heterodynes, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri; and for my Banner Maker's Choice Award, [livejournal.com profile] teragramm.  Congratulations! The theme this round was "red heads", check out all the winning entries and banners HERE.

My entries for Challenge 135 after the cut. Fandoms: BtVS, Avengers (MCU). Many many many thanks, as always, to my beta-Muse [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip for her input:

Arranged roughly from most painterly/stylized to photographic/realistic.  I'm really pleased with how #1 and it's alts (below) turned out.  I layered several textures by [livejournal.com profile] lookslikerain that give it the look of a post-impressionist oil pastel by Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas or Toulouse-Latrec.

....because HERE be 3 tiebreakers for Round 15 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20. And we all know how [livejournal.com profile] feliciacraft feels about tiebreaker voting but darn it, it's a happening thing and if it leads to more of her brilliantly satirical stanzas I make no apologies.

And HERE be voting for Challenge 135 "Red Heads" of [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite; 33 - count' em, 33! - gorgeous icons to choose from for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Best Crop, Best Color and Most Creative.  Most rounds of WE lately haven't gotten enough entries to warrent the full voting slate; this time everyone came out to play and they brought their A-game.

Voting is such sweet sorrow.

And totally off-topic:

* I've read Buffy comic S10 #23 and overall I quite enjoyed it.  I may at some point even choose to discuss it.

* Things I didn't know I needed in life until I saw them: I came across two Orphan Black/Buffy videos today on YouTube by Orphan Crack:
-- Orphan Black credits Buffy-style by Orphan Crack; spoilers for all three seasons.
I love how the credits list the characters rather than the actors. (Although it would be funny to see "tatiana maslany" repeated)
-- Orphan Black + Buffy musical episode sets the OB characters into the episode "Once More With Feeling", specifically the number "I've got a
feeling" and it works suprisingly well. The biggest giggle is Felix being assigned Xander's lines.
red_satin_doll: (Buffy Casablanca Poster v1 poppy wreath)
1) For [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness Challenge 60 vote for your favorite icon for the third place position.

BTW, did you vote at [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 15 yet?  Good.  Now have you signed up for Round 16 yet?

2) And by the by, did you know that [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix posted the artwork she commissioned from me for her excellent Anya/Snap crossover fic, The Letters (84 Charing Cross Road)?  (TTH post here.) But you will have to read the story to find it because  it's intergrated into the text. And FYI, the actual text of the artworks is entirely her concept. I just followed marching orders.

At AO3 she also included a marvelous story banner by Restfield aka [livejournal.com profile] rbfvid.

3) My friend [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 has been writing up a storm - a very quiet storm that snuck up on me and took me entirely by surprise.  His latest is a Buffy/Faith fic, "Casablanca" (not to be confused with [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight's fic) that is poignant and mournful and like all of his work is a prose-poem unlike anyone else's.

Last year I sort of asked him to write Buffy more often (actually I may have whined about it a little, but never mind that.)  He's come through while remaining true to himself in his own beautiful way.  This story is actually part of the birthday gift for [livejournal.com profile] elisi, the 22'verse that includes stories of Spike and Illyri, Riley Finn, Xander and Buffy, etc. Also worth a look - a charming, gentle Tara, Dawn fic (post The-Gift): Like Seeing Your Very Own Self Looking Back at You.

See, not every post I put up is longer than the Constitution. Some are only as long as the Gettysburg Address. "Short and sweet" is a relative thing.
red_satin_doll: (Ms Miller OOMOOS btvs S1)
Or, the evolution of my New Year's greetings:
1) Here's to a happy new year!
           2) It has to be better than last year?
3) Let's hope it doesn't suck.

On the other hand: Viola Davis is looking F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S on the cover of InStyle Magazine.  It had this cover by Jan Welters at the doctor's office instead of the newstand version; and it looks more like the cover of Vogue circa 1977 than InStyle. I normally wouldn't line the bottom of a birdcage with that rag, but DAMN, that photoshoot. That woman.
******
Moving on.......It's been a while since I did a good old-fashioned promo post isn't it? [livejournal.com profile] fassy is starting an new icontest comm and is seeking a mod or two to help run it. (There is already one volunteer but I imagine back-up can't hurt. And for the record, I saw Star Wars (the original of course) in the theater back in 19-mumblety-something, so I am still not used to seeing the name "JJ Abrams" in the same sentence with Star Wars.(Given the nightmare f**kfest that was the "prequels", I think I can learn to deal.)

Speaking of icontests:

* [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite: Icons for Challenge 135, "Red Hair" are due Sunday, January 24th by 3 pm EST. Make sure to scroll down the page and check out
the fabulous entries already submitted by [livejournal.com profile] harlequinss_s, [livejournal.com profile] teragramm, [livejournal.com profile] all_malocks, [livejournal.com profile] dixon, [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer and [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri. And I do mean "fabulous"; everybody's brought their A-game. At least in this little corner of the world 2016 is off to a roaring start.

* [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness: Challenge 61, "Reach Out and Touch Somebody" open for entries now through Friday Jan 29 midnight at your time zone.

* [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20: Voting is open for Round 15 NOW through Friday January 22nd. Be sure to cast your votes for THEMES, CATEGORY, and ARTIST'S CHOICE.

Make sure to click ALL the buttons before you're done, and if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask the mods. There are about -19-20 votes cast right now which is super but more would be great! I don't think we've ever hit at least 30 votes in a given round but I always think "ok this is the round..." (Back to the Optimist vs Realist conundrum and in my heart I always want the Optimist to win out.)

And because you've made it this far here are some lovely parting gifts: alts and extras from Round 15 plus new alts/ extras from Round 13. I also have a thinky thought or two along the way:

Teasers:

Round 13, "The Pack"

    1 - 3

      4 - 7

Crossovers with the movie "Possession" starring SMG.

Round 15: (Buffy-heavy at first. Of course. This is me, this is my brain on the Buffyverse.)
             8 - 14
            15 - 21

              22 - 28
After I cleaned the cap up I finally saw that the picture on locker behind Buffy is vintage comic book art, possibly a blow-/print of a Roy Lichtenstein piece, with the SDHS "Razorbacks" pennant covering the eyes of a pretty blonde woman in the picture. Meta commentary on the storyline or just an inside joke?  The fact that we see Cordy blindfolded later and no one can "see" Marcy Ross suggests either reading is possible. It seems to coincidental to be a, well, a coincidence.
         29 - 34

          35 - 40

        41 - 45
The flashbacks in the episode look great as screencaps but they're hard to work with; they're overlit as opposed to the rest of the early seasons material, which tends to be underlit.

      46 - 49
Also, I need to take some tutorials on working with skin tones for people of color, especially dark tones and not turn beautiful deep browns into weird shades of orange-red, or flat black. (We've just acquired PS btw, so I'm still fumbling along in ipiccy.)  #49: for the theme "green" I thought, well, I'll just tint the entire icon to go with the chalkboard behind her. Except that it doesn't look very good. Green skin? Usually associated with sickness or aliens? I should have known better. Plus, "black" skin reacts differently to tinting than "white" skin does.*

But it's the second association that bothers me. Our culture has a nearly long history of excluding black characters and actors from science fiction, horror and fantasy in literature, film and tv, except as background filler or literal "space aliens", demons and monsters. People of color as people just did not exist, with count-on-one-hand exceptions.

This may be changing now, I guess - slowly - but this is the reality I grew up with and "it's starting to get better" (by whatever yardstick you want to measure "better") doesn't undo decades of absence. So it just makes me uncomfortable, even if I don't "mean anything by it", I'd rather not go in that direction.**

*    I realize I'm still using phrases like "black" and "white" that were au courant when I was growing up...in the 1970's and '80's.
** Using my personal comfort as the yardstick here is arguably problematic.

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy for starting this new comm! 31 people have signed up for this round (WOW); check out the entries submitted by [livejournal.com profile] gabby227, [livejournal.com profile] crazycordy and [livejournal.com profile] killing_kurare.

BTW, the deadline for entries is November 15th and the sign-up period is open all the way until then; you can still jump in and join the fun.

And be sure to add your answer to the banner poll and if you're interested, volunteer as a banner maker. I've volunteered and I'd love to see more people making awards banners. I love making them - they're fun but also challenging and I've learned a lot about digitial editing, layers, design, etc by making them. Practice, practice, practice. It gives me an opportunity to study the icons - and I often come to appreciate them more than I did during the voting process - and then there's the pleasure that comes when the recipients like their banners. Honestly, who doesn't like presents?

I actually have a message I hope you'll hear regarding some icontests that need your attention - and the poster has nothing to do with anything, I just wanted to bribe you show off share a pretty with my peeps. (And now I've got a mental picture of marshmallow chicks and bunnies sitting in front of very tiny computer screens getting sticky yellow sugar all over their keyboards. You're welcome.)

* Only 24 hours left to vote at [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 12 THEMES CATEGORY ARTIST'S CHOICE Oddly enough the voting stalled out days ago at
only 19 - 20 votes cast so if you or someone you know hasn't had a chance to weight in before, now's the time. (I still wish I could have chosen 12 instead
of six individual icons in Category and Artist's Choice.) Have fun!

Sign-ups for Round 13 are open now and as usual will remain open until the end of the round.

My poster for The Relish Collection Series (aka "the Femalehusbandverse") (2015) especially "The Female Husband" made for [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014. This poster is an adaption of one I originally made for Ray as an unofficial banner (#8) for the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards at his request. He asked me to make some banners for his own nominated stories and wished for something female-centric rather than the male-centric official nominee buttons. I'd been meaning to make a fic poster for that series for some time and Ray's "commission" gave me an excuse:

For his nomination, he used #3 at his journal. It's not in the style of the official buttons but I liked the way it came out. I then made myself a Fuffy-themed banner that I really like but again - not in the style of the official buttons so I've decided against using it. (The beautiful textures in both courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri.)

[livejournal.com profile] angelus2hot gave me permission to make these but asked asked me to match the style and size of the official Angel and Lindsey ones made by [livejournal.com profile] angelstoy. (I also had in mind the style and coloring of the SPN and X-Files buttons.) She gave me permission to use these buttons - and I'm happy to share but please remember these are not official site buttons.

Deadline for nominations for the 12th Round of the [livejournal.com profile] wicked_awards is August 31st - check out the list of fiction/art nominees and music video nominees.

Voting posts are now up for Round 11 at [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20; deadline to vote is August 22nd:

THEMES                 CATEGORY SETS             ARTIST'S CHOICE SETS

You know what to do, Sweet Baby Jane. There are only four artists to choose from this round. Should make things easier, no? No. No, it does not.

Not that I mean to influence the vote because that would be wrong but - how on earth is the Inside theme a three-way tie? How is [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer's [livejournal.com profile] killing_kurare's*  brilliant interpretation of the theme not leading the pack?

Just sayin'.

*And this is what I get for posting at 4:30 something in the morning -  thank you [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer for pointing out my futz-up!

The gorgeous[livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness banner was made by [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper; I adore how well it echoes my icon stylistically, and the boldness of her font choices. Not only am I far more limited in that regard I'm also far more timid. [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite banner by yours' truly; image of Elisha Dushku on The Chosen Two gallery, (photographer unknown).

Feast your eyes on the winning entries and banners at both comms here and here respectively. My own entries:
    3 - 7
Challenge 49 at [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness was "white decoration"; the textures on icons 3 - 6 are all by the [livejournal.com profile] lookslikerain. I swear that the the bars on icon #6 looked white-ish (off-white) to me - until I actually sent the set to [livejournal.com profile] starry_night and - oops. oh. damn.

If icon #5 reminds you of the Willow character poster I made for Ipseity by [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr, it should. ;-)  The symbols on the left hand side are glyphs created by Laurel Cannon.

. Poster 2 for Ipseity by Spuffy Luvr Willow variant 8

A tsunami of alts (once again, all textures except on the Joyce icons by [livejournal.com profile] lookslikerain). I particularly like the texture on #9 :

    9 - 11

          12 - 16

            17 - 22

      23 - 26
Quote on #24 from the gorgeous short story "Grave Daughter" by Nightmarish on A03. I really wanted that quote in my entry icon but I wasn't happy with the clarity/resolution of the text and I tried a couple of different fonts.

The [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite challenge was - well, a challenge; I had already made some lovely framed icons of Faith for Round 10 of [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 and didn't feel like I really had much else to say at the moment. For whatever reason Faith doesn't inspire me, visually or thematically, the way Buffy, Willow, Dawn, Joyce, Tara and now, Lorne, do. (Giles is the other fella I am starting to get comfortable with in terms of making icons - I hope.) Hence the shortage of alt versions. You're welcome.
       27 - 32

I am really happy with my banners for the round however. I wasn't sure what photo to use at first but I liked this one partly because of the white light in the upper-right corner; it provided a space to fit the icons without having to take the separate step of place them in a frame of give them a shadow to make them pop.The photo was black and white and I toyed with cropping it and just letting it be, but I felt like that would almost be too derivative of [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper's banner. So I started adding the color, toyed with sharpening and softening filters, and the added an additional layer to the lower left side - a photograph of lights (carlights?) in the darkness I took last year, set to Lighten or Screen.

I particularly like how the Light Use banner for [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri turned out because those shades of pink and red are hard to match.  I wasn't really trying for exact matches anyway but simply to coordinate nicely. The BMC banner for [livejournal.com profile] teragramm was the first one I made and I was happy with it right off the bat, no need for remakes. The yellow, orange and green tone banners were much harder by comparison. The banner for [livejournal.com profile] everythingshiny's first place winner was probably the hardest in that regard.
