[livejournal.com profile] comlodge took the "simple" flipbook concept and turned into something incredibly sophisticated;  then she converted merged the images at my request into a single banner for my LJ. I know of few artists (if any?) who can combine luminousity and grunge effects in a single image.




3) Look Both Ways by [livejournal.com profile] boiiko - the rightful winner of the [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy Round 18 Banner Poll, and the only banner for the SS banner poll I've seen done in a hand-painted style. (It was actually done on computer, but it sure fooled me.) Almost elegantlly spare, the composition is deceptively "simple" and packed with layers of complicated emotions. More, please.


4) Out of My MInd from the btvs episode poster series by no-literally on tumblr. This is an ongoing project and every one of the posters is a masterpiece of graphic design; but I chose this one to display because of the incredibly clean, simple graphic that, like the other images on this list, is deceptively complex. Look close at the text and you'll see Spike's dream of kissing Buffy, floating above Spike's head - the dream and the dreamer visualized.

[livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 is officially closed this session, which means no more posts this round - but it's like a party where the kitchen is closed but there's tons of food and drink still overflowing the buffet table and another gallery wall you probably haven't seen yet. I got in four posts of wonderful fics and artwork recs - better late than never? - thank you to [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian and [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo for hosting such an incredible party twice a year.

Right now I'm enjoying three fics that you can expect to see on my Top 5 recs for next January - why not start early this time around?:

Answering Prayers by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Joyce/Angel, early S3 AU) is a marvelous, funny, touching "deleted episode" that focuses on Joyce's personal journey as a Slayer's mom but also as a woman and a person in her own right as she tries to find answers to where her baby girl might have gone and finds more than she bargained for. Why aren't there thousands of such stories?  Why has Joyce been so overlooked in fandom?  I don't know but this fic feels like an oasis in the desert and just might become the story that future fan writers build off of and around when it comes to writing about her.  So far it's very PG (up to chapter 3 and no sex scenes) and I have no idea where Gabrielle is taking this. But I cannot wait to find out.

the kids are alright by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten (Tara, Dawn, Buffy/Tara, S7-AU) the next segment in the B/T Finding a Balance 'verse, this one focuses on Tara's relationship with Dawn as surrogate parent, in a late seasons AU in which the women of the 'verse support and love one another, damaged children doing their best and somehow managing to keep the darkness at bay. I don't associate this author with "fluff" and this is - and it isn't. Again I ask, why aren't there a thousand fics about the Tara & Dawn relationship? This makes a lovely pairing with [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni's "The Real You".

Palimpset by [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr.[livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Buffy/Spike - or is it, Buffy/William? - and Willow, AU S10 comics.) The link takes you to the epilogue, which has links to the previous four chapters. Think shades of "The Ballad of Randy and Joan" and [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy's "Building Character" but plottier, a wild ride with intricate issues of identity and agency roiling beneath the surface. I need to reread it before I can comment on the last two sections. It's incredibly subversive on several levels, not the least of which is the key role Willow  and the Willow/Buffy relationship plays here; their friendship is not the sidenote in a spuffy fic, it's absolutely central.  I've said this before: [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr is becoming a Willow author of note.

Full disclosure (aka "Why no I'm not a hypocrite...") : When I don't do as well as I'd like in a round, I mope and mewl and gripe about it pitifully and wonder "Why not?". (Especially if I'm in the throes of severe depression - not an acceptable excuse but not fun and not pretty, I assure you.)

When I do well in a particular round, I sit back slack-jawed and wonder "Wow, neat but - why?  Shouldn't folks be voting for that other person's icons? They totally should be."

The last two weeks I've received a sudden and unexpected influx of gifts and blessings here on LJ, and just gotten quite a lot of pleasure out of my participation in this fandom. I've been wanting to acknowledge all the love coming my way and spread it out, but it's hard to put into words. Or rather, words I have by the ton; coherence not so much. So I'm going to try to return and spread the love out all this week, because it's too much for one little post.

1) Buffyverse Top 5 was just a tremendous amount of fun to participate in. [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian and [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo deserve a huge round of applause for being such wonderful hosts, as always; and kudos to everyone who participated with rec lists of their own and/or comments. It was a great party! I remember enjoying myself last year but not to the same degree as this time but I was very new to fandom, didn't know as many people; and was focused on the goal of rec'ing meta because nearly all the other rec lists were focused on fanfic, with emphasis on shippiness.

This time around I had a lot of things I wanted to rec in every genre - fic, meta, art, vids - and only had time for a fraction of what I wanted to do. But other folks had the same idea: picspams, podcasts, videos, meta, some folks mixed things up in all forms; a lot of very new to me authors and stories that covered a wide range of the Buffyverse in terms of 'ships, gen, female-centric, etc - something for everyone. All of it very high quality on every level of craft (technique) and art. There's enough there to keep me busy neglecting housework chores for some months to come. And it continued a trend that I've noticed of late: that my fandom circle of aquaintance, friendships, reading habits and tastes have been widening. It keeps things more interesting and fun, and reminds me just how large this fandom really is, and how much variety of people and interests within it.

The "bad news" is that this round is over until the next "Classic Round" starting October 30th. The good news is that gives me plenty of time to procrastinate until the last minute prepare my lists in advance.

(And I hope y'all will forgive me an indulgence: I already mentioned in my last post that [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo surprised me by including one of my own posts from last June in their Top 5 picspam list. What I forgot to mention because it hadn't sunk in quite yet, was that I was keeping company alongside [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies and [livejournal.com profile] comlodge, two of the most amazingly talented artists in this fandom. Are you kidding? I'm still dancing with joy.)





2) While I'm celebrating communities here, I want to give a shout-out to the wonderful editors of the Sunnydale Herald: [livejournal.com profile] rahirah[livejournal.com profile] secondalto, [livejournal.com profile] oni_9, [livejournal.com profile] lynnylou, [livejournal.com profile] gillo, [livejournal.com profile] audela & [livejournal.com profile] menomegirl  continue to prove at least 2-4 times a week that the activity and creativity in this fandom is truly an embarrassment of riches with your . At least 2-3 of the meta I rec'd on Buffyverse Top 5 I found on their lists, not to mention all the meta I wanted to rec but didn't have the time to. (Barb explained to me once how they manage to run and organize it and I still can't wrap my head around the work they do.)


And they've been providing something invaluable: free marketing and PR. Readers I wouldn't have been able to draw on my own, even if it's one person, and I didn't have to lift a finger. I didn't even have to tell anyone I'd written it; it's just there. I've watched my sweetie try to build her art blog and an audience out of whole cloth, without the support of a community or ready-made audience and it is damn hard and frustrating work. So every time I see one of my posts linked there it's another gift just falling into my lap, and I don't think there's any way I can adequately express my gratitude for that except to say "thank you".  (Can I get an "amen", somebody?)

I'd been promising myself I'd do a rec list of Top 5 stories by [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 - and ended up doing two (here and here). Some fics were easy choices because they are so dear to my heart, to how I approach the Buffyverse and feel about the characters; or aren't anything like I normally read but are wonderfully sexy, or disturbing. Which meant some hard choices still had to be made. *sniffle*

Last week I'd hoped that more people would post lists and y'all have done so, in a big way: in all genres and media (fic, video, meta, artwork), and from all "niches" of this fandom. This round has been wonderfully diverse and really taken the idea of "celebrating the love" to it's fullest extent I think. There's so much love there and so much to love. And why not? Isn't the Buffyverse, at it's core, about love in all it's aspects?

There's only one drawback: it ends on Sunday, January 19th, at 6pm EST (US/North America.) Not a lot of time left. (Don't say I didn't warn you, ok?) I have at least two, maybe three (?) meta rec lists I want to put up, and I'm away from the computer on weekends. Which means I have to get it all done TOMORROW.

I don't suppose, dearest mods *flutters eyelashes winsomely in [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian's direction* that I could request an extension this round? Because, goodness, it's going so beautifully don't you think?

[livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo for included one of my own posts from last year, "Our Mother/Her Mother/Our Self (Buffy, Joyce, Dawn)" in their list of Top 5 Picspam Collections on Tuesday. I was not expecting that at all. It never would have occured to me that post would make a Top 5 list, especially considering all the wonderful, sophisticated picspam art there is out there to chose from. I'm very happy that it communicated my love for the women in the 'verse in a way that strikes a chord with others.You've honored me more than you know.

Took me three or four days to write this post celebrating my favorite friendship and non-canon OTF(amily). Not, mind you, three to four days sitting 8 hours straight at the computer, of course (more like, sit down, get up to do something, write a little more, go run errands in town, add another link, suddenly realize I'm hungry, come back and realize I'd added 6 stories, agonize over the descriptions, cook dinner, hit post. You know how it is...right?)

"I told you there are people in fandom who love us just for ourselves, sweetie."

Every time I got on the computer to continue writing I'd peek nervously at the BT5 home page in case someone else did a post on the subject before I finished or rec'd the stories I planned to; because in this instance I literallly had five and only five stories on my list. Buffy and Tara friendship (or even B/T ship fics) are one of THE hardest things to find in this fandom. And the only reason I even had five on my list was because [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15 rec'd new-to-me author [livejournal.com profile] elviswhataguy and literally saved my biscuits.

So, no one in swooped in before me, thank goodness; nor has anyone else done a "5 female-centric fics by [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1" rec list. SHE'S MINE AND YOU CAN'T HAVE HER, PEOPLE. (I am, however, willing to share her on alternate Tuesdays.) No one else has done another meta list or an art list or...anything, actually, since [livejournal.com profile] rebcake posted her AO3 list on Sunday...three days ago.

Not that I'm trying to be a nag or anything, folks but....oh who the hell am I kidding? Ask my sweetie, she'll tell you: I AM an old-school nag and yes, I am nagging you right here and now. (A gal's gotta play to her strengths.)

DON'T LET BT5 DIE OUT! I need recs, lots of recs! Art, icons, fics, vids, essays! Show me stuff I haven't seen before, introduce me to people and to corners of fandom I didn't know existed. Show me that buffyverse fandom is about more than just "shipping" (romance, porn, whathaveyou.) Remind me of the richness of this verse as well as the unrealized posssibilities. Tell me something I don't know. Surprise me. Celebrate your favorite people and things - pimpage (aka "love") is what makes the fandom go 'round.

How else do you think I'm going to fill my empty hours and hone my talent for endless procrastination this year?

And if you won't do it for me, then, um....think of the children?

Once again, it took me all damn day (because I'm slow, badly organized and indecisive) - and once again it was worth it. TBT5 is one of the very best ways I know of in this fandom to discover works I've missed otherwise. And it's fun to see what other people come up with! F.ex. [livejournal.com profile] snogged posted a recs list of "remix" fanfics  - how cool and clever is that?

And at the risk of sounding like a broken record: the range of work that is rec'd there - hell, the sheer volume of material I'm having to sift through just to cut down to "top 5" this or that in any medium - is proof-positive that this fandom is not dying. I know I wasn't there "back in the day", or back when everyone was scratchin' and fightin' over the comics. But I've participated in a "dying fandom", i.e. dead and flatlined within five years: no more vids, fics, no discussion or creativity. I know from a dead fandom, and the Buffyverse, darlings, ain't it.

Now go and share some love, pretty please.

Posting my top 5 fanvid recs list in this round of TBT5 ended up being more challenging than I thought it would be! For one thing, [livejournal.com profile] endeni and [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo both rec'd two vids I had on my list ( here and here respectively); just yesterday I wished that more people would post non-fic rec lists. I gotta be careful what I wish for!

Also, my post honestly took me half the day to complete; I'd probably be a lot faster if I actually wrote out a list beforehand, maybe? (Like that'll happen.)  If I'd been faster and included all the ones I'd intended to I might have been able to put up another 5 vids; I may be able to find a couple more because the mods are strict on the 5 recs per post rule, and there's a couple of vids I hate to leave off, including Kayennatic's elegant and mournful Buffy character study, "O 'Death" .

Anyway only about four people, myself included have put up rec lists so far  - [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip has 5 favorite Willow fics - so there's plenty of room for participation. The more the merrier, come join the party!

Buffyverse Top 5 is OPEN today through January 19th for recs of any fan-created Buffyverse works either started or continued during the past year. (Check out the posting guidelines here.)
As I'm still kicking myself for missing the October Classic round, I'm determined to participate in this round with some meta and vid lists, especially as most rec lists consist entirely of fanfics. I'd also love to do an artwork rec list, or at least hoping other folks will be similarly inspired to do so as fanart. Meta , videos and artwork need love too! That said, I'll probably rec some of my favorite female-centric stories as well, because this has been a rich year IMO.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo just posted a top five meta recs list!  BLESS.

Searching for vids and meta from 2013,  I noticed that fannish activity is scattered or diffuse: fiction on LJ as well as ff.net and AO3: gifsets/animations and artwork on tumbler: meta (nonfiction) of all types including rewatches, analysis, love letters to the Buffyverse & et cetera scattered on Blogger, Wordpress, and various websites scattered hither and yon. This fandom isn't "dying" by any means, IMNSHO - it's alive and well and living on the internet.

And now for something completely different: my first (visual) love letters to the women of the Buffyverse for 2014. For the longest time I couldn't figure out how to make text that was actually legible in iconson the Photobucket editing suite. I played around a bit and finally came up with a few things today I'm halfway pleased with, although I'm still not satisfied with the sharpness of some of these. Feel free to take any you like but give proper credit as always. ADVICE, FEEDBACK & CONCRIT IS WELCOMED AND ENCOURAGED.

The first two of these I think of as "mini-metas" in icon form:
#1 from Band Candy: I'm intrigued by how much of the Summer sisters' personalities come from their parents, especially Joyce - including a proclivity for kinky sex and bondage games. Just sayin'. The Summers women like sex; it's unfortunate that Joss and the writers' hang-ups prevent a truly empowering sex-positive message for women. *le sigh*

#2 came about when I realized a few months ago that the destruction of the Buffybot in "Bargaining Pt 2" called back to Spike's promise to Dru in "School Hard"; but I couldn't bring myself to use the image of the actual moment the 'bot was pulled apart by the demon gang. I also realized that there are some intriguing parallels between Dru and Buffy as "madwomen", "seers", symbolic mother figures, and as Angel and Willow's "masterpieces" that I think deserves further exploration.

And of course #10 because there aren't enough Tara icons and I love that image, that moment from Bargaining. Like Buffy, Tara is a woman who overcomes the fear and shame of believing she's a "demon", finds astonishing layers of strength, is a protector at heart and "filled with love".

Buffyverse Top 5 Classic Recs: Starting at midnight GMT on October 31 (6 PM EST in the U.S. on Oct 30) Buffyverse Top 5 will be celebrating Halloween through all the time zones for  four days. Fics, vids, artwork, etc of ANY age across the Jossverse, including crossovers.

Last January was my first time participating in the annual Buffyverse Top 5 and I'm not a list-maker by nature, but this was as addictive as popcorn sprinkled with smoked applewood salt and ground rosemary.

[livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix asked a VERY important question for this round: "There are stories I'd like to rec but can't find links to. Can I list my top 5 stores I'd rec if I could find the links?" Fortunately the answer to that is "Yes". This is timely and relevant if you're like me and your desktop computer with hundreds of links and bookmarks was recently turned into a rather pricey charcoal briquette.
(The other day I spent hours searching through [livejournal.com profile] molly_may's journal just to find the link to her superb meta on Giles in S7 to share with [livejournal.com profile] bone_dry1013. I kid you not. You don't even want to know how much time it took me to find [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia's Self Indulgent Post-NFA Spuffy Ramble, a fic I love with all my heart, because I couldn't remember how to spell "stultiloquentia". This is embarrassing, kids.)

I'm thinking I may cheat a bit and do a list of "favorite meta writers" rather than favorite metas. I mean, how do you decide which of [livejournal.com profile] the_royal_anna's or [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy's metas are "best"? How do you decide which sunset is more beautiful, which pearl more lustrous, than all the others?  I am also planning on doing at least one or three posts on my favorite fan videos; fan vids get less love in this part of fandom here on LJ, IMO, than fics do; this is tragic and must be corrected.  Some of them will actually be by people other than [livejournal.com profile] nvrbnkisst. Prepare to be shocked.
