infinitewhale and I were discussing Get it Done and he made a comment that I just HAD to do something with.  And since I'm in a somewhat snarky mood anyway thanks to current life circumstances (getting laid off with no notice oh thank you very much please kick me in the ass a little harder won't you sir?) I decided to let it rip.
Warnings for - I guess if you're a fan of anybody except Buffy? IDK.

I honestly think half the reason I kind of love S7 is it's so much freakin' fun to make fun of.

I kinda think that Buffy was so rude and cruel about Chloe's suicide because she was super-stressed and super-in charge of every fucking thing. Nobody shared that level of responsability. I wish that Willow would be more in charge (But I understand why she wasn't) because I don't think that she could have possibly relied on someone else. (Spike always followed her like the best soldier, but he was recently crazy and souled so no leadership decisions on that front)

I think the writing did the other characters a huge disservice in order to get from point A to point B, especially the female characters. The first half of the season had a lot of interaction between Buffy, Willow, Anya, and it seemed like it was going to get back to the feeling of friendships and sisterhood of S5.

But weirdly enough, on the way to a message about metaphorical "female solidarity" it pitched actual connections between actual female characters out the window.

Poor general!Buffy. So underestimated. I love her.

I just want to give her a hug and a hot meal, order her to get some sleep, a spa and a therapist.
And give her shin guards.

I guess that they wanted to underline the solitude at the top. Buffy with all that power also had all the responsabilities and she couldn't share them with others. (Hence Faith's speech on her bed) But they had also to show women connecting to justify the slayer spell at the end. I think that's maybe the reason why so many people didn't connect with the whole Willow and Buffy activating all the slayers. Why do it if relationships between women suck? I guess that they should have done it more gradually.

The more I think about it and the more I get to believe that another season of the show was needed. Just to really do a good job with the whole First/Slayers thing. The first half of the season is so beautiful, but starting to Potential it feels all rushed. Maybe they needed more time.

I do appreciate the tentative too. And I also - unpopular opinion - like the fact that they show Buffy being rude. If she was always in control and always calm she could have been mistaken for an awful Mary Sue. Instead she also gets things wrong. She's human.

the first half is possibly the best, most consistent first half of any season, arguably? STSP felt a bit of a slog for me but Selfless, Beneath You, Him, CWDP, all solid good to great episodes. It felt like it was really going to be a great season and then - I guess Joss' plans changed behind the scenes and potential (that word again) spin-offs fell through, but they had seven years to figure out where they wanted to go.

but I still love the season despite its flaws, or maybe because of them, just like the characters I guess. And hey, it could have sucked worse.

PREACH IT TO THE MOUNTAINTOPS. All of the characters in the show are flawed, including the women. And that to me makes them more real, more loveable. (Which is why the arguments "so and so was the best/worst friend!" strike me as tone deaf and beside the point.) If I wanted perfect people fantasy I'd hang out at the Hallmark card store. Or watch laundry detergent commercials.

When I was in college we used to have long conversations about how anger was the only emotion men were allowed to express, and the only one women weren't allowed to express. I think a lot of that has changed, as least in terms of the range of expression that men are allowed, I'm not sure about women? this was before Buffy was on tv; if she'd been on while I was in college she'd have been exhibit A in our arguments,

I think there's something sort of sick with a society that cannot bear women to be flawed, angry, fully human.

Maybe I hang around the wrong places but I really am surprised there isn't more S7 fix it fics beyond the usual "Buffy needs to realize sooner how much she really loved Spike/Angel/Faith/Giles/Xander/Clem" (ok, I'm joking about Clem. Maybe.)

Speaking of fics - how is the Giles as Big bad fic coming along?

I'm posting on the 29th which means, since I keep expanding it, that I really need to crack down and write, write, write. Oh, and it's not a S7 fic. It's based on the comic canon. I'm writing my own version of Giles being reincarnated into a 12 year old body.

I've finished a draft of Giles as the Big Bad but there are things I want to change in the next version. I've been so busy with And if My Love and now this one that the Giles fic has been on the back burner. I'll be getting back to it after I post at Summer of Giles if not before.
