So go and vote for your favorites, the best of the best if such decisions can be made. What is "best" really? I used to whine and complain when I had 9 - 30 entries to chose from? I had NO IDEA how good I had it. Oh to be so young and innocent again (as I was last week...)
It's a trade off: on the one hand I've LOVED giving and getting feedback beforehand. Showing off more of my work, knowing who made what and learning from y'all how stuff is done is marvelous and energizing. Artists NEED audiences, even an audience of one. And vice versa.
And artists need a community of other artists to learn and grow. I've seen how not having that, how being a lone wolf, has been harmful to my sweetheart's growth as an artist. It stunts her if anything - hence the need to go to NYC last October and attend the Armory Show and expose herself to work she'd never seen before.
OTOH, it makes it a little harder to vote, if anything - I feel that nagging sense of "oh I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings". Which, oddly enough, I don't feel when I vote in or judge fic contests. Perhaps because it feels as if the "fic writing community" is larger than the "visual arts community (icon makers)" in this fandom, although that may just be my perception and limited scope of aquaintance. IDK.
And now I understand why you can't see the voting results in other icontests I've participated in. I thought it would be nifty? I'm re-thinking that stance. I'm feeling nervous all over again. And a little sick. Ok, I was feeling sick before thanks to a life-changing event involving sudden loss of income leading to numbness and depression but also nausea - which makes it sound like I'm fishing for pity votes or somesuch nonsense and really not. (Does that make it sound like I'm fishing for pity votes? Oh god I hope not. Somebody slap me upside the head. Or even better, hug me - hugs are of the good!)
Anyhoo - thank you everyone for your support, encouragement and feedback. Seriously, you folks have kept me from curling up in a very small ball in the corner (because it's impossible to sit at the desk and type in a fetal position.)

Date: 2014-06-09 07:30 pm (UTC)It has been a good round, but that does make that final decision harder!
I have signed on for next month ... BtVS, season 1 (so, no Spike!!) ... hope that you join in, as well.

Date: 2014-06-09 07:41 pm (UTC)I saw that - go you! :) I think that's a nifty claim. Season 1 is terribly underrated IMO and deserves more love. I can wait to see.
And I did sign up - my first choice was Vamp Willow (surprise!) because I've been meaning to do some VW icons for a while and this is the perfect motivation.

I'm already jazzed about who has signed up and the claims.
Btw I didn't see the deadline do you know that yet? I'm going on vacation mid-July for a week so I'll want to get mine done early this time, no last minute lucy!
no subject
Date: 2014-06-09 08:26 pm (UTC)Nope, I still don't know. The deadline is given along with the themes post and that's gonna be up in a few days...but I guess the deadline would be somewhere between the first two weeks of July...so you should ok.

Date: 2014-06-10 02:22 am (UTC)There are so many options for that comm in regards to BTVS/ATS it is so hard to decide on what to do!
Right? I now want to do Buffy/The First in Sleeper, Buffy in Amends; I'd love to do an entire round of just hand symbolism from btvs (I wonder if that's a claimable claim?) but first - VampWillow. Mmmm...
Hasn't there been a btvsats20in20 comm before?
no subject
Date: 2014-06-10 02:53 am (UTC)And I saw that you claimed vamp!Willow... I adore her and was thinking about claiming her or the episode(s) sometime in future rounds. The Wish and Dopplegangland are probably the episodes I have watched the most out of the series. I'm really looking forward to what you come up with!

Date: 2014-06-10 03:03 am (UTC)It's funny that Vamp Willow (lesbian vampire seal of approval) was probably my first icon in this fandom (and first icon in many years) but I haven't gone back to that well but once or twice since. My folder for The Wish/Dopplegangland is my only btvs caps folder not dominated by Buffy - it's all VampWillow gorgeousness.
And I feel like I want to do it especially for "my Willow fans" (yourself, Gabrielle, Wickedbish, snogged etc) who have been such great friends to me. I hope i don't disappoint.
Btw your icon - DEAR GOD. so wonderfully trashy!

Date: 2014-06-10 05:38 pm (UTC)I listed all the ones which are snaggable by me and which aren't and those who are made by others are snaggable unless otherwise stated.
And thanks! That one I did make!

Date: 2014-06-10 06:20 pm (UTC)I don't know why I didn't make the connection that you made the Dawn squee icon which is a classic IMO. So many pretties - and the fact that the text in "Bored now" is still legible when it's shrunk on my template says a LOT about the clarity of it in full size (which is even more gorgeous btw.)
Oddly enough one of my favorites of yours is Buffy Movie - a lovely crop of Kristie, wonderful light and I'm really struck again by how you achieve HQ definition whilst still maintaining light and softness.
It's interesting that you state specifically "please credit" on your own because I would think folks would know to do that...but you've obviously had issues and/or I'm extremely naive
no subject
Date: 2014-08-25 09:29 pm (UTC)Thank you for such wonderful compliments with my icons :) I put the please credit me on some icons because I have a mixture of icons from myself and others, it is just something I like to do. :)

I've actually got myself thinking about doing an icon or art for it and I don't think I've ever "prompted myself" before! (or better yet, saying pretty please to comlodge). Maybe it could be like a spinoff AU of brutti ma buoni's Wingsverse fics?

Date: 2014-06-10 01:06 pm (UTC)I'm so excited to see you signed up. (What program do you use to make icons btw, just out of curiosity?)The sign ups so far have been mostly female-centric and I LOVE IT. Maybe you started something because there are also two people claiming Dawn and at least two Buffy, in addition to the The Body. More Summers ladylove oh YES PLEASE.
I laughed going through Band Candy caps for Joyce images.
Ooh, Band Candy as a future claim...And Earshot - "You had sex with Giles?" in Earshot is one of the funniest damn things in the entire series. Top ten moment.
Just one thing - I was reading your posts yesterday on your journal (too tired to comment and I don't know HP) and I'm wondering are you needing a mother hen-ing? We do NOT want your grades to suffer, young lady.
Also, your new has a very nice, visually clean layout.

Date: 2014-06-10 07:25 pm (UTC)Also, have you seen Orange is the New Black? It's on Netflix, and I love it because it uses a white girl as a "trojan horse" to tell the stories of other women of all shapes, sizes and colors. It does have the main character cheating on her partner, but I think it's still worth watching.

Date: 2014-06-10 07:47 pm (UTC)it uses a white girl as a "trojan horse" to tell the stories of other women of all shapes, sizes and colors.
I'm not familiar with the use of that term in this context but I've seen movies and tv shows for decades that use a white protagonist to "tell the stories" of POC. That trope has probably been around for centuriesm actually. (Cry Freedom, Mississipi Burning, Dances with Wolves, etc etc etc.) Why don't writers/creators use POC's to tell the stories of POC's?

Date: 2014-06-10 10:36 pm (UTC)I need to get OiTNB icons now.

Date: 2014-06-11 01:31 pm (UTC)Actually no, if you mean on US television, it's not:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-American_Girl_(1994_TV_series)
All-American Girl is a 1994 ABC situation comedy starring Margaret Cho and featuring Jodi Long, Clyde Kusatsu, Amy Hill, B.D. Wong, and J.B. Quon as her Korean-American family. It is the second American sitcom centered on a person of Asian descent (Korean), namely Cho. (Pat Morita's short-lived 1976 sitcom Mr. T and Tina was the first.)
I'm still a little puzzled by the use of the term "trojan horse" in this context. Is that a slangy way of using it that's current in academia? The trojan horse was a weapon of war and the phrase is still used to mean a dangerous trick that allows infiltration. The greeks used it to decimate Troy - just as whites have decimated peoples around the world for centuries, so maybe not the connection you were trying to evoke.

Date: 2014-06-11 05:23 pm (UTC)"Trojan Horse" was a term used in a presentation I saw about the use of Piper as a gateway to tell other women's stories - it was a clever conference paper title, basically.

Date: 2014-06-12 02:10 pm (UTC)Goodness yes. And I thought OWL and SS challenges were difficult!
I don't know if I voted differently at the 20in20 to the others because I had seen all the entries beforehand but I swear that there were so many icons I didn't remember. When they are mixed together with each other and out of their original context I see different things. (I kept looking at my voting slate and realizing I had 7-9 checked and had to pare down.)
Voting for b/w set was one of the most difficult because there were a couple of icons that I looked at for the longest time wondering "is there color in those or are they just warmer and cooler versions of grey/black..." when I'm forced to make choices my brain goes crazy with the analytical.
BTW - it's not showing up as well here because my template shrinks icons in convo threads but I saw the Freshman icon on your journal and LOVE IT. The jewel-like bits of color are perfectly done and I have no idea why there aren't more icons of that moment because it's one of my favorite Buffy moments of awesome.

Date: 2014-06-13 12:53 am (UTC)I saw the Freshman icon on your journal and LOVE IT. Thank you! I made it several years ago and (IMHO) it still stands the test of time. I'm not usually still happy with the icons I made when I first started making icons.

Date: 2014-06-13 02:21 am (UTC)OMG that is exactly the phrase I use when I write up my sweetheart's ebay auctions for her paintings. Fortunately when she does sell one the response she always gets back from the buyer is "it's better in person".
But you're absolutely right. I blame recent shock and numbness of job loss. Which is very conducive to staring at the screen for large amounts of time.
I made it several years ago and (IMHO) it still stands the test of time.
Some things are classic for a reason. :)

Date: 2014-06-14 12:52 am (UTC)And hello there and welcome, how did you find me? I see that you're friends with two of the best writers in fandom, rahirah and il_mio_capitano; and I started reading your fic A Scent of flowers and am intrigued because I adore all three pairings. Will explore your fics further. I admit I'm a little shy about NC-17, is there anything in your stuff that will likely make me cry? (torture, Buffy-bashing, etc *lol*)
Re: Cool
Date: 2014-06-14 05:55 am (UTC)I found you through the Herald, when I was reading back over things. The best thing about the Buffy fandom, in my opinion, is that it's so large that there are so many great ideas and items floating around.
'A Scent Of Flowers' is one of the first peices I ever wrote, but in spite of its age, it's still one of my favourites. The two stories that I've done in 'Right of Claim' so far, now they do go to an extremely dark place, and one that's far from everyone's cup of tea. Still, in saying that, I still love 'em. The rest are tame enough, though, and I'm in the process of slowly uploading everything from my LJ, Twisting the Hellmouth, and FF.net accounts, to my Ao3 account. The stories you see on any one site at the moment are only the tip of the iceburg. And I'm happy to say that I've never bashed a character. XD
I love talking with other artsy types, and seeing good quality artwork, and I can definitly understand having...may I call it an obsession.... with a minor character. Ethan Rayne has wormed his twisted little self into a place that's very close to my heart.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to know you a little more.
Re: Cool
Date: 2014-06-14 04:42 pm (UTC)Links to BMB's Pylea/Winged Slayer fics and the banner I commissioned from Comlodge for it here:
http://red-satin-doll.livejournal.com/16934.html
The story created such a strong image in my head I commissioned the banner - with BMB's permission and I'd never done such a thing, (Then comlodge treated me to the Winged Buffy manip prezzie, the first time someone made something like that for me as a gift.)
And yay to the su_herald! I find so much good stuff there, I think you're the first or second person to tell me they found me through them, It's such a marvelous resource. I'm 2 years new to Buffy and Buffy fandom and this fandom is so incredibly rich, so creative, I'm grateful to the folks at the herald for the work they do. I could never find all the stuff they link to on my own.
now they do go to an extremely dark place,
If there are warnings then I can always make a decision to go there or not. (it's the few times I've a read a story with no warnings and then - WHOA, didn't see that coming - that have been the problem.)
And I'll have to check out your stories on Ao3, I love the format of that site as a reader; and I've just started dipping into Twisting the Hellmouth. As with ff.net there is so MUCH there and a lot of dross, so it helps to have writers I'm looking for specifically.
I've never bashed a character.
Coolness (although I've had unkind words for a character or two I usually have kept private or in an f'locked rant but I do try to be fair and understanding to all of them.)
Looking forward to getting to know and being known better, I hope I don't disappoint! I have one fic posted here and a couple of meta posts I'm proud of if you're interested
