* Thank you to the voters at
actress_ic Challenge 111 for voting my Lillian Gish icon Best Crop, and congratulations to the other winners
erinm_4600,
dragonydreams,

ciuciuvaraworld,
sandy79 and
mops1980! This is my first time entering this icontest and it's very encouraging.
Thanks as ever to my darling beta-Muse
velvetwhip for her input. My entries this round are dedicated to her because of our shared love of silent films; and she requested the Alice Joyce icon, introducing me to an actress I'd never heard of before.
1-4 are my entries, 5-6 the alts. 1, 2 & 5: Lillian Gish; 5: Dorothy Mackaill; 4, 6: Alice Joyce
1 - 6

Speaking of betas, the final slate of nominations for Round 11 of rwsawards have been posted and THANK YOU to the darling person who surprised me with a Best Beta nomination! I understand these awards are judged (rather than popular vote) and thank goodness; becaus I can find so many of my favorite fics of the last year in any given category, I'd be paralyzed with indecision. I don't envy the judges one bit; the nominations slate is a Who's Who of some of the very best writers and artists in Buffyverse fandom right now. I'd name off all my friends who have been nominated but we'd be here all day so, trust, you're better off checking it out for yourself.

I'm very fond of #5 but was uncertain of it as an entry, maybe because of the texture. It's a photo of Gish I hadn't seen before.

Date: 2016-02-06 09:51 am (UTC)I've been on a silents kick lately, especially after reading Catherynne Valente's novel Radiance (basically, silent movie stars colonising the solar system by cannon and shooting hand-coloured melodramas on the moon), and one of the movies I've watched is The Wind, starring Gish. Holy shit, she was awesome in that.

Date: 2016-02-08 11:00 pm (UTC)I had the good fortune to see The Wind at the old revival theater (complete with live organ music) in downtown Ann Arbor Michigan when I was going to college. I watched from the balcony of course because that's the only place to really watch a movie. (I dare say the balcony was where the "colored folks" were restricted to back in the day. ) Back then she was one of my idols, I completely adored her. Have you ever seen Night of the Hunter?
I also suffered through a horrible copy of Broken Blossoms on a really fuzzy and tiny tv set with foil wrapped around the antenna. That was way before YouTube and Netflix, when restored movies were just becoming a "thing".

Have you ever seen Night of the Hunter?
Oh yes. Brilliant film. It's been a while though, I should probably rewatch. Once I get past my current "all movies made after 1929 suck" phase. :)

Eh, there are a handful worth your time - but it's amazing how few and far between those actually are. (At the risk of sounding like a snob. Like that ever stopped me before.)
Diary of a Lost Girl OTOH is overrated, or rather, Louise Brooks is. Just sayin'

Date: 2016-02-10 10:11 am (UTC)Have you seen Pandora's Box? I thought she was pretty good in that, even if the moral of the story is slightly iffy, to say the least. Plus, canon lesbian character in 1929.

Don't I know it. I have a ton of DVDs and BluRays I've bought, watched once, and kept for some reason. Sometimes I wish someone could impose a 10-year moratorium on new books, movies and TV series so I could catch up and reread/rewatch everything in peace... :)
