Otherwise we'd never cast votes for fabulous stories because we don't know the author. (like, I don't know eurydice72, and "A Stone's throw from yesterday" was one of the most memorable stories I read last year.)
Of course there's still having to deal with feeling guilty or rather awkward afterwards if we didn't vote for a friend's piece. It's not the guilt it's the embarrassment that's the worst. *lol*
