Thank you for the nominations and awards!

* Thank you to the voters at [livejournal.com profile] actress_ic Challenge 111 for voting my Lillian Gish icon Best Crop, and congratulations to the other winners [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600, [livejournal.com profile] dragonydreams, [livejournal.com profile] vampgirl_nisha, [livejournal.com profile] ciuciuvaraworld, [livejournal.com profile] sandy79 and [livejournal.com profile] mops1980! This is my first time entering this icontest and it's very encouraging.
Thanks as ever to my darling beta-Muse [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip for her input. My entries this round are dedicated to her because of our shared love of silent films; and she requested the Alice Joyce icon, introducing me to an actress I'd never heard of before.

1-4 are my entries, 5-6 the alts. 1, 2 & 5: Lillian Gish; 5: Dorothy Mackaill; 4, 6: Alice Joyce

Winner, Best Crop

Speaking of betas, the final slate of nominations for Round 11 of rwsawards have been posted and THANK YOU to the darling person who surprised me with a Best Beta nomination!  I understand these awards are judged (rather than popular vote) and thank goodness; becaus I can find so many of my favorite fics of the last year in any given category, I'd be paralyzed with indecision. I don't envy the judges one bit; the nominations slate is a Who's Who of some of the very best writers and artists in Buffyverse fandom right now. I'd name off all my friends who have been nominated but we'd be here all day so, trust, you're better off checking it out for yourself.

ETA: I forgot to mention that there's a tiebreaker post for [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness for Challenge 61 going on right now. Oops. ( I shall have to go harrass poor [livejournal.com profile] feliciacraft.)

Congrats, and yay for silent movies! I can't remember if I've seen any of Mackaill's or Joyce's movies, but Lillian Gish was brilliant, and these are gorgeous - I especially like #4 and #5.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-04 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Lillian Gish was one of my idols when I was in my teens (by which I mean the 1980's and '90's, - I'm not that old *lol*) but I don't think I've seen either of the other two actresses either.

Congratulations on your nods at RWSA!

I'm very fond of #5 but was uncertain of it as an entry, maybe because of the texture. It's a photo of Gish I hadn't seen before.

Thank you!

I've been on a silents kick lately, especially after reading Catherynne Valente's novel Radiance (basically, silent movie stars colonising the solar system by cannon and shooting hand-coloured melodramas on the moon), and one of the movies I've watched is The Wind, starring Gish. Holy shit, she was awesome in that.

Lillian Gish gifs? MY LIFE IS NOW COMPLETE!!!

I had the good fortune to see The Wind at the old revival theater (complete with live organ music) in downtown Ann Arbor Michigan when I was going to college. I watched from the balcony of course because that's the only place to really watch a movie. (I dare say the balcony was where the "colored folks" were restricted to back in the day. ) Back then she was one of my idols, I completely adored her. Have you ever seen Night of the Hunter?

I also suffered through a horrible copy of Broken Blossoms on a really fuzzy and tiny tv set with foil wrapped around the antenna. That was way before YouTube and Netflix, when restored movies were just becoming a "thing".

Jealous now. They regularly show silent movies with live music at the Film Institute here, but it's not exactly a classic theatre.

Have you ever seen Night of the Hunter?

Oh yes. Brilliant film. It's been a while though, I should probably rewatch. Once I get past my current "all movies made after 1929 suck" phase. :)

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-10 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a fancy theater and I haven't been there in over 20 years but I have fond memories - it's also where I first saw Thelma and Louise with a group of my friends (at the same time I was coming out as a lesbian. God, I really loved the college experience as difficult as it was at times, being working class and having little financial support. Exploring films, discovering my own tastes, meeting people from around the world, the discussions late into the night....being introduced to old-school Doctor Who for the first time....

It's been a while though, I should probably rewatch.

Eh, there are a handful worth your time - but it's amazing how few and far between those actually are. (At the risk of sounding like a snob. Like that ever stopped me before.)

Diary of a Lost Girl OTOH is overrated, or rather, Louise Brooks is. Just sayin'

Have you seen Pandora's Box? I thought she was pretty good in that, even if the moral of the story is slightly iffy, to say the least. Plus, canon lesbian character in 1929.

Don't I know it. I have a ton of DVDs and BluRays I've bought, watched once, and kept for some reason. Sometimes I wish someone could impose a 10-year moratorium on new books, movies and TV series so I could catch up and reread/rewatch everything in peace... :)

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-10 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No I haven't seen Pandora's Box yet. I think I want to more because of Louise Brook's memoir-essay about it in Lulu in Hollywood, than about the fact of the onscreen lesbian character (and how Pabst got what he wanted onscreen is a story in itself.)

Yay! You won!!!! (Not that I am the least bit surprised!) Also, kudos on that best beta nom. You truly deserve it!

Thank you sweetheart!

Congrats. It's a fun contest, you'll like it. I've been participating for at least a year.

I think I was so impressed with the quality of icons I let myself get intimidated and put off joining in which is silly - that's how one improves is being challenged, and all-women all the time? Right up my alley.

Congratulations on your second place win!

Very pretty! I like #1 and #3 but they are all very sweet and old fashioned looking, which fits the subjects.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you hon! I'm pleased with these, especially with how #3 came out and the soft glow I got, which wasn't easy given how old and grainy these images generally are.

As usual, I couldn't tell you how I made these if my life depended on it.

I just voted at the voters choice portion of RWSA btw, good luck!

Congrats on your nomination and your win! The Best Crop icon is so pretty! I love the way you framed her face.

Thank you so much! I forgot to credit [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax for the "frames" on these icons(including the ring of flowers on #3.)

Back in the LJ lands. Yaaaay!

First of all CONGRATS on your winnings/nominations. I saw that you also won some pretty things at slayerstillness just now! Also, PRETTIES! I don't know who these actresses are but their faces are so pretty and your icons are perfect for the retrĂ² style. I can't even choose. Maybe icon 3 for the clarity and the soft pink? Or maybe 6, 4, 1 and all of them?

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2016-02-05 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Beautiful icons, hunny.

Congrats on your win and your nomination for best beta. :)

Oh wow, these are all super lovely. I really love their soft romantic vintage look.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2016-02-06 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm quite pleased with these (except maybe 5, I want to have another go at that one, but it's such a wonderful photo of Gish to begin with.)

And a congrats to you, as well :D
