I tried to read through the wikipedia description of the ep and I get I'm missing stuff because i haven't watched the series but it still felt like a chunk of the synopsis was missing.
ETA: the funny thing was that Susan wasn't supposed to be his granddaughter, just a companion but this being the 1960's the networks had issues with a very young girl flying around in a box with an old man. (Which is not just a 1960's thing - probably the reason they had to make the point in Helpless about Giles having a "father's love for the child". Because when you start to think about it....which is why it's best not to think about it.)
