Eheh, you know? You're right, that'd be so cool!

Also, it feels like a very appropriate icon to use in the light of the historical ruling of the Supreme Court in the US, after Ireland's historical referendum. If only things weren't still stuck in the Midde Ages here in Italy... *shakes head*

And yet Spain has gay marriage. As does Uruguay in South America. Aren't they both primary Catholic countries? I can't get my head around that. And the fact that, according to friends, Northern Ireland has not adopted gay marriage because of the conservative protestant forces in the country (much like the conservative protestant/fundamentalist forces in the US that held sway in the '80's and '90's.)

It's all just so - weird.

Sorry, dear! But, um, didn't Pope Francis just write about the importance of ecology? Baby steps? (I keep hoping the entire Vatican and the edifice that is the Catholic hierarchy sinks into the ground never to be heard from again - but I wish that of all oppressive religions. And from what [livejournal.com profile] kikimay has mentioned to me, the Church is still very powerful in Italy.)

But I would wear a "Fuck Thomas Aquinas" t-shirt. I'd actually pay money for said shirt.

IMH the difference is mainly due to:
1. Italian history of political instability (if you're interested, I just posted about it)
2. The fact that other Catholic countries in the world don't have the Pope living *right there*. Of course, there's a long tradition of bigotry to overcome but, more than that, as [livejournal.com profile] kikimay said, the Church's presence has shaped so much of our history and is still such a cumbersome presence in the political discourse.
3. And, of course, the current economic crisis and the migrant crisis are not making things any easier. As always, when things are bad, people tend to find fault in the Other, be it gay or foreign people, and Nationalist (Lega Nord) and Populist (Movimento Cinque Stelle) factions get increasingly more traction.
It's a worrying trend that doesn't leave me much hope for a speedy legalization of Same-Sex Marriage in the near future. *sighs*

/I keep hoping the entire Vatican and the edifice that is the Catholic hierarchy sinks into the ground never to be heard from again - but I wish that of all oppressive religions./ - Eheh, if only!!
And now I kind of want to print that shirt for myself too. :D
