Tsunami of Polls: We moved back into the restored apartment....

......and my first "official" act in fandom was to:

[Poll #1965322][Poll #1965322]

And the correct answer is....

#5! Yup, a massive, massive fail on my part.  Actually, all of the choices represent a massive fail on my part, except for the last choice for which I DO NOT APOLOGIZE.
(She was mentioning how a character in her new novel has an opportunity to mindwipe the memories of another and doesn't because he respects her too much and it's not what she would want. Also, she just began watching btvs S1 at my urging and is NOT impressed with Angel or Xander. At all.) I actually spent hours making icons for [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness challenge #22 "A Room Full of Emptiness" (Negative Space)" ("Ooh, I can do this one!"); hours dithering over which to chose before deciding to actually ask my beta [livejournal.com profile] wickedbish for help; and then failed to send him the link to the Photobucket folder so he could actually see the icons. By the time I figured out my mistake, it was too late to enter the challenge. (And I'm a little pissed at myself, because I think I made some good icons and really enjoyed getting back into the creative flow for the first time in weeks.)

But at least I manage to vote as the deadline isn't until tomorrow (midnight your time) hence still time to vote and pimp it - so there's a penance, at least.

And entries are being accepted for the latest challenge #23 (deadline Friday) so there's lots o' time left to enter. Yup, lots o' time....

The only fail more massive is #4 - I have NOT gotten around to congratulating all the winners of the Willowy Goodness Awards, including [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip, [livejournal.com profile] snogged, [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh, [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1, [livejournal.com profile] tiny_white_hats, and snowpuppies amoung others. Congratulations to all the winners (by which I include "Runners Up" aka the silver and bronze medalists). I actually did vote in that one too and cheese on a cracker did you folks make it painfully hard to choose!

ETA:  ALL credit to the amazing [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn for urging me to watch Orphan Black, which I'd never heard of until she mentioned it.

And we haven't even mentioned that lizards have prehensile tongues. (Yes, this is canon. On a family show.)

(I'm being very naughty & hotlinking. Hope it'll show up!)

Hotlinking? Bad fangirl! No biscuit for you!

Ok, so clearly I was just looking for an excuse to use my "Judging you" gif. Which is barely animated so what's the point really and YES that photo shows up and the quality is GORGEOUS. Is it direct from the BBC's site?

And holy cats in the cradle us that shot SEXY and there is so much communicated in that mutual look, in the slight tilt in Vasta's head. Ok, granted the two of them are meant to be as attractive as possible to the contemporary audience (and putting women in buttoned vests is ironically an excellent way to show off their figures - we look less mannish, not more so in them).

But The Gaze is not exclusive to gender, - and I like what I see! (there are websites devoted to this couple, right?)

Which seasons/which Doctor are they on?

It is a good gif, I approve. :) And I've no idea where the picture is from, I found it on Google. (I'm a baaaaaad lazy person.)

And holy cats in the cradle us that shot SEXY and there is so much communicated in that mutual look, in the slight tilt in Vasta's head.
And you don't even know what they're saying. *g* (The things Moffat gets away with. It goes straight over the kids' heads of course, but oh my.)

Ok, granted the two of them are meant to be as attractive as possible to the contemporary audience (and putting women in buttoned vests is ironically an excellent way to show off their figures - we look less mannish, not more so in them).
Usually they're in Victorian dresses (which are also flattering of course).

But The Gaze is not exclusive to gender, - and I like what I see! (there are websites devoted to this couple, right?)
I should think so! (But avoid spoilers. Don't go looking!)

Which seasons/which Doctor are they on?
Eleventh Doctor. The show isn't back on air until the autumn (S8 - August, I think), so now would be the perfect time to catch up! Start with (New Who) S5 - the first episode is called The Eleventh Hour (Eleven's first episode). Vastra & Jenny don't turn up until S6, but the Silurians (Vastra is a Silurian, other people have probably mentioned this) are (re-)introduced in S5.

ANYWAY. Have a go at The Eleventh Hour. See if you like it. (There are only 13 episodes per season - plus a Christmas Special - so it won't take you forever to watch. Going back and watching all the other Doctors is of course a different matter. *g*)

A couple of months ago my friend Kerkevik was complementing my new icons and I thought wait, how can he see that?....oh, you can see anyone's icons by checking out their profile. So, stalking icons is now one of my favorite pastimes!

And agreed, that icon turned out beautifully - and it works well even here on my journal, which shrinks them down to 75 pixels. Yours I can still see the major details, the assymetrical composition is strong and the text is completely legible (it's a thing with me.)

I did some icons on ipiccy btw and tossed them all out except a Tara icon was that was really reworking one I'd already made and added some effects; now I'm stupidly fond of it. I'm sure it's really crude but I never had that "handwriting" overlay effect to play with before, and I love letters.

And Lexi told me that VM and OB were MUST-SEES and I love her and trust her recs so that's actually next on my list after/along with OB. (I tend to rip through entire shows, then move on to the next one rather than watch simultaneously, the way I read books - I don't stop reading just because a chapter ends.)

While Who... just completely fails on that point.

And I think that's one of the reasons why I haven't watched it yet, although ten years ago a friend of mine was a #10 fanatic and I know it's very popular; also I "know too much". I went into Buffy blind (except for Tara's death) and that was a good thing, I think. I'm going into Orphan Black the same way.

Also why I haven't watched AtS yet - I know too much and what I know, I don't like. (And it's harder for me to get into shows - or books or movies - with male protagonists. It just IS and has always been that way with me. I don't have the same identification and I don't want to see the same old- same old narratives.)

My Doctor in college was #7 and his companion Ace, the surrogate father-daughter pairing who preceded Buffy and Giles for me, except the power balance is quite different; but it was the first of the old Who that delved into feminist themes and felt very fresh to my friends and I in college. So, twenty years on, new Who should be building on that and very different, right? No?

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok someone make this spinoff NOW, pretty please? Because I would watch the HELL out of that series.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a baaaaaad lazy person.

Apparently that makes two of us because I've squirreled a copy away in mty PB. Who else do you who makes icons for shows they haven't seen, I ask you?

I hope this shows up, it's a png file, not a jpg. (I was going to submit a Spuffy icon I made months ago and I kind of adore to Slayerstillness and only yesterday found out it's a png file *pout*)

The entire time all I can think is, how do I get rid of the dude in the middle? *lol*

Going back and watching all the other Doctors is of course a different matter. *g*

Oh if you mean all the way back to #1, thank God I got aquainted via my friends and PBS in college twenty years ago! (Note to self: rewatch the Seventh Doctor and Ace.)

Smart, intelligent, wonderful people. I can has?

The entire time all I can think is, how do I get rid of the dude in the middle? *lol*
*clamps mouth shut omg* (When you've seen that scene, you'll know why! *g*)

Very wise!

(Note to self: rewatch the Seventh Doctor and Ace.)
Ooooh, you have marvellous taste! Eleven is like a dotty grandfather version of Seven. (They are my favourites, can you tell?)

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I can has?

Of course you can! (If I come up with something I like better, you'll be the first to know)

When you've seen that scene, you'll know why!

You mean the gift BGF linked to upthread, where she uses her prehensile tongue on him? Awesome.

Eleven is like a dotty grandfather version of Seven.

Interesting! *strokes chin* I recently read a wiki write-up of Seven and Ace to explain it to someone else and they sounded very very much like - Buffy and Giles in their dynamic. Which is part of the reason I want to watch it again. They were my first surrogate father-daughter pairing in fiction that I became fascinated with (later Satine and Zidler, Buffy and Giles, Jordan Cavenaugh and Garret Macy...it's a thing with me apparently. NOT biological fathers-daughters in fiction, though.)

Of course the effects will probably be even worse than I remember!

[identity profile] kwritten.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
(I stalk icons sometimes, too.)

and the text is completely legible (it's a thing with me.)
I have a hard time with text because I don't like it to overwhelm the piece and I also want people to be able to see it? however, I prefer dimmed/blended words because they tend to fit into the piece better. however, that's unfair of me because I know that some of the concoctions I've made are difficult to read. otherworldly is difficult for me mostly because text icons bother me and I find most of them unattractive - unless the composition is completely wholistic and nothing feels out of place.

I think that Tara icon is lovely.

VM is totally worth it. I think it's the best.

See, I knew the correct answer but I was just hoping for something a lot more fun and outrageous even if it actually just ended up a love fest for all things fandom and we all sat around and chewed the fat on world savage or rewrote the history of woman or even just made a kewpie doll. Still condolences on being human and stuffing up. At least you got the practice in. :D

Oh and you should, you know, post the icons so we can all admire. :D

And in my "headcanon" that's exactly what happened!

Oh and you should, you know, post the icons so we can all admire. :D

Yes, ma'am! I'll consider that my "marching orders".

Yay for moving back!!!!!

I thought about #5, but OB is just so good I hope you get to see it soon, s2 has just started and I'm already on the edge of my seat!

Looking forward to all the new icons! <3

I wrestle with all those issues as well. And I've worn glasses since I was a kid so for me the text has to be legible or not be there at all. But I've admired (envied) the ability to make fonts translucent over the image, to adjust the opacity of the letters so the text is intergrated rather than plopped to the side.

The tara icon is an obvious exception - using illegible "handwriting" as an effect in and of itself was delightful because I'd always wanted to do that. I liked the idea that Tara was, in her act of courage, fulfilling a prophecy (or going against one); or maybe it was a letter to or from her mother. We don't see Tara writing in the series that I recall but I always assumed she did - journals, letter, poems, spells etc. I can see that as another thing that connects her with Dawn.

And thank you very much for the feedback on it! that's quite a compliment as you know I admire your icons so much. I didn't go in with a concept on that one, I was just playing with it, so - serenedipity.

The other exception of course are "comic" or meta icons where the text really is the point.

otherworldly is difficult for me mostly because text icons bother me and I find most of them unattractive - unless the composition is completely wholistic and nothing feels out of place.

I wouldn't have guessed judging from your entries, they seem entirely assured. I've been extremely impressed by the overall quality of OWL entries lately (and by the female-centricity of the submissions). I've been looking at some of my "older" icons lately and deleting them because they look ugly to me now.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-23 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I started to watch S1.2 with my sweetie last night and she wasn't in the mood for it. I guess this is something I'll just have to "suffer" on my own *lol*

[identity profile] kwritten.livejournal.com 2014-04-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've worn glasses since the first grade and understand wanting it to be clear.

I really love that handwriting effect in ipiccy. I used to use it all the time. Unfortunately I think all of those graphics were lost in my recent laptop breakdown. I lost my hard drive completely :(

The other exception of course are "comic" or meta icons where the text really is the point.
I always like these, but have never attempted to make one of my own.

Thanks for all your lovely compliments!!

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately I think all of those graphics were lost in my recent laptop breakdown. I lost my hard drive completely :(

Given that our desktop and two external harddrives were lost in the fire last year I SYMPATHIZE. Oh boy do I ever. (I had a rough draft of a picspam meta comparing Dru and Buffy in School Hard/Becoming that I doubt I'll be able to reproduce *sniffle*)

So you don't have an online storage then? That's what I like about Photobucket, or what I used to like - it had the fotoflexer editing suite (now it has a different one that I don't like as much) and it stores photos. I need to back my stuff up to my own external harddrive in case the site crashes.

That's the benefit of PB - all my pics are there so when I want to make an icon and have an off-the-cuff idea, it's all in one place.

BTW, comlodge introduced me to pixlr-o-matic, which has some fun effects but I haven't really mastered it yet. (I like the grungy effects like "worn" that makes a pic look like it's under a piece of badly scratched glass). You can apparently download it.
http://pixlr.com/o-matic/

And comedic or meta icons - I have to be in the mood. Which usually means "incredibly snarky about something someone in fandom said" or else I'm just amusing myself.

And the compliments are no trouble whatsoever because they are all entirely true! :)

[identity profile] kwritten.livejournal.com 2014-04-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
(I had a rough draft of a picspam meta comparing Dru and Buffy in School Hard/Becoming that I doubt I'll be able to reproduce *sniffle*)
picspam metas are my very favorites and this sounds so lovely!

I ... am inconsistent with online storage and backing up my stuff. I dump into googledrive occasionally (usually at the end of semester - but since that's no longer my timeframe?) but nothing bad has ever happened before so... it was a hard lesson learned.

I lost the Introduction to my thesis.

I hate PB because the site is so slow and I am not savvy enough to organize myself there in a productive way. #lazy

*Shows up five hours late to the party*

I picked OB, because I know you and your sweetie watched the pilot together recently, but that was insider information.

The orgy sounds fun. [livejournal.com profile] kikimay has the cutest bras.

Orphan Black is everything Dollhouse and Ringer tried to be but not. I think the Canadians win this round.

I am delighted that [livejournal.com profile] elisi introduced you to Who's signature inter-species Victorian lesbian couple. They're very pretty together, aren't they?

You and [livejournal.com profile] kwritten make pretty icons, and it was fun listening in while you talk shop.

And I spoiled my friends for "Surprise/Innocence" because I thought "Angel loses his soul" was one of those widely-known pop culture things like "soylent green is people" and "Bruce Willis was dead the whole time." It was probably also mean-spirited on my part because I got sick of them sighing over Angel when I made them watch BtVS. Less justified than spoiling IWRY for righteous indignation reasons.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-24 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that an OB icon? I see OB gifs and icons in my future. BTW, I got my sweetie to watch eps 2 and 3 with me GO ME! (She confessed to me that drama/suspense shows like that make her physically jittery and she has no idea why. So we watched some Anthony Bourdain to relax afterwards.)

And holy SHIT - I'm so excited I've got to keep myself from spoiling it for anyone here who isn't watching it because I am SO HOOKED. Totally. It's a suspense/mystery/sci-fi drama with wonderful comedy interwoven into it. You win EVERYTHING for rec'ing it to me.

And you know I do not fall easily for male characters but Felix is LOVE. TOTAL LOVE.

One nitpick:

(*MILD SPOILERS*) the scene with Sarah and the psychiatrist in ep3? Pretty damn awesome on Sarah's end - my sweetie keeps saying "she's not too bright" but I'm continually impressed by how quick-thinking and clever she is. A smart girl who's probably been written off by the entire world (except Felix) and is now getting to really show everyone what she's made of.
But the depiction of the psychiatrist - or of the psychiatry and meds - kind of bugs because it falls in line with the trope I see a lot. (Even Ringer managed to avoid that one.) That docs mix meds and hand them out like candy, etc. I've never had that problem with the psychiatrists I've gone to; I have had it and seen it with my partner with regular docs for physical ailments. Everything else is gold though (Gah, that last scene in ep 3, what the HELL is that thing? Not who, what? Like a cross between an anime villain and a prehistoric leviathan rising from the mud.) /*END SPOILERS*

Somebody hand Tatiana an Emmy, please. Or a Golden Globe or SOMETHING.

Soylent Green is people? *LMAO*

I try to avoid spoilers because I've been spoiled in the past - in college my friend saw War of the Roses at the theater and HATED it, because it was totally outside of her life experience, so she spoiled it for everyone so they "wouldn't see it". Well of course I saw it eventually, and my mom took her then-boyfriend to see it as well. He was as shaken as my friend was. Mom and I just said to one another "Thank god we're not in that situation anymore." So I try to avoid spoiling things out of malice - with my friend I asked her permission and got her permission first to talk about IWRY (she knows the series Angel exists anyway - actually she's seen Dollhouse and Firefly but never the buffyverse); and it was in a specific context.

You will be interested to know that she is NOT amused by Xander, either, because she said she's known guys like that "who think that you should be in love with them just because they want you to." When I watched Season 1 I thought "Xander why don't you notice that pretty girl pining for you?" and she's thinking "Willow you can do SO MUCH BETTER."

I think my feminism might need a tune up. Or a major recalibration.

You and kwritten make pretty icons,

Thank you hon, but I'm nowhere near to her in that regard. Have you seen [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1's latest icons btw? Works of art in miniature.

They're very pretty together, aren't they?

And you know, there's a teensy bit of discomfort in me about that - culturally we can only accept or depict lesbians if they are pretty enough to appeal to both genders - but that's overwhelmed by the fact that they exist and everything they are, by the fact that in college it was constantly assumed I was straight because I was "too feminine" to be a lesbian so I've been there myself, and also - bifurcated tongue! Samari swords! Gah. Being a feminist and a lesbian doesn't mean I'm blind.

See, I don't want to watch Doctor Who. I want to watch Vasta and Jenny. I want that series NOW.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-24 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
picspam metas are my very favorites and this sounds so lovely!

It was actually - but I was adding meta paragraphs as well (you know me) and that was the biggest bitch of it. I think I was trying to bite off too much at one go. Breaking it down might make it easier for me but that's how my brain works. (this is maybe why I do well with icons in that I have to FOCUS on one image at a time.)

Speaking of, I adore your Dawn and Tara icon - the assymmetrical composition? The delicate wash of colors? YES PLEASE.

I lost the Introduction to my thesis.

!!!!! So sorry hon! Were you able to re-create it? Trying to remember something written is always a bitch and for me a little terrifying.

I learned that lesson myself in college btw - before there was any such thing as icloud or whatnot twenty years ago and we were converting from floppy discs (very easily damaged) to hard discs (also apt to go wonky). Staring at a blank screen realizing I hadn't backed stuff up.

And you are not wrong about PB. It is creaky - and I don't like the new editing suite as much (but now I don't like the old on anymore either, and I'm too lazy to go back and forth between two or more sites just to make icons.)

#lazy

Wait, what? I'm constantly looking at what you post on your journal and wonder how the HELL do you get so much done (because that's just the journal and not including school ,work and everything else you do) and feel like a freaking SLUG myself. If you think you're lazy how do you think that makes lazy people like me feel? *LMAO*

But orgies are optional.

Orphan Black should be mandatory.

WE ALL DO.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED TO WATCH TBH

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I27kI31dhs

Tatiana needs all of the awards. All of them. (and I'll excuse the awful english accent because she is just that good an actress). And also point out that Felix has the most convincing accent I've ever heard and I would have sworn he was English. And yes, he is amazing. Love for Felix.

Have you seen clockwork_hart1's latest icons btw? Works of art in miniature.

Blushing! You are too nice and they aren't that good, but I am happy with my latest one. I took the Mary Morstan drinking tea icon and put it together with Alice Morgan from Luther doing the same thing, because classy murderesses drink tea, okay? And because they are my favourite people. One is a kitten-loving, utterly sweet and lovely former assassin and the other is an incredibly intelligent, sexy, certifiable (and, in fact, committed to a psychiatric hospital at one point) serial killer with utter respect (and protection) for those who impress her. They could take down the world.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-24 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Orphan Black should be mandatory.

RIGHT?

I just watched two more eps with my sweetie last night (and she did not say "let's turn this off" which is a huge thing coming from her although I could have kept going through the whole season in one go. NEED THIS.) And bless eilowyn forevah for making me watch it.

(And thanks for stopping by to comment, hon!)

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-24 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Where would we be without you?" / "Quite some distance from a clue, one imagines."

*LOL*

and, I covet her hat. Just sayin'.

Is it just me or is the fact that the Inspector is more freaked by the fact that Vastra and Jenny are lesbians than the alien/prehuman/outer space aspects a deliberate meta commentary or what?

And now that I've seen those two and BLESS YOU and curse you for hooking me in because I want MORE, I want this series so much I want this and wonder WHY doesn't that exist? Sexy victorian ladies in leather? Smart, sexy Victorian lesbians? What is not to love here?

(and I'll excuse the awful english accent because she is just that good an actress).

Is it bad? I'll take your word on that. And wait, Felix isn't English IRL? Because he sounds exactly like the actors I recently saw in an indie film from the UK.

My favorite felix part so far is when he fans his face in ep 1 before opening the door to Victor and slapping Victor across the face - not to hurt him, just to be dramatic and play up the part and he is just so perfect all the time.

But it's interesting because he's the "sidekick" to the female protagonist and that's still unusual isn't it? Also unusual at least from my experience of tv (which is a tad outdated) that they didn't need to "tell me" that Felix is gay, I knew it immediately. It's who he is but it's not a "thing" to be shocked at or "deal with" either, it's just a fact. Which is how it SHOULD BE, IMHO.

And I already love Cosima after just one ep - and she's based on the real life science consultant for the show, which is very cool http://www.bbcamerica.com/orphan-black/videos/insider-meet-the-real-cosima/

"Sorry. I wanted to float that whole clone thing a lot softer." Aweseome.

Tatiana just plays the shit out of all these different people and that cannot be easy to make them all distinct and real and not just different stereotypes. My sweetie actually didn't recognize Tatiana as "the German" I had to point it out to her.

Tatiana needs all of the awards. All of them.

But does the same resistance to "genre" works still exist when it comes to voters that did when Buffy was on the air?

I wish I could see your icons better on my LJ - the one thing I hate is that it shrinks everybody's icons. You're doing some marvelous complex stuff with "collages" and overlays at the same time that I've never attempted; and I love your use of color; your palette is very distinct to you from anyone else's.

Do I need to watch Luther? Because this intrigues me - a lot.
