Tsunami of Polls: We moved back into the restored apartment....

......and my first "official" act in fandom was to:

[Poll #1965322][Poll #1965322]

And the correct answer is....

#5! Yup, a massive, massive fail on my part.  Actually, all of the choices represent a massive fail on my part, except for the last choice for which I DO NOT APOLOGIZE.
(She was mentioning how a character in her new novel has an opportunity to mindwipe the memories of another and doesn't because he respects her too much and it's not what she would want. Also, she just began watching btvs S1 at my urging and is NOT impressed with Angel or Xander. At all.) I actually spent hours making icons for [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness challenge #22 "A Room Full of Emptiness" (Negative Space)" ("Ooh, I can do this one!"); hours dithering over which to chose before deciding to actually ask my beta [livejournal.com profile] wickedbish for help; and then failed to send him the link to the Photobucket folder so he could actually see the icons. By the time I figured out my mistake, it was too late to enter the challenge. (And I'm a little pissed at myself, because I think I made some good icons and really enjoyed getting back into the creative flow for the first time in weeks.)

But at least I manage to vote as the deadline isn't until tomorrow (midnight your time) hence still time to vote and pimp it - so there's a penance, at least.

And entries are being accepted for the latest challenge #23 (deadline Friday) so there's lots o' time left to enter. Yup, lots o' time....

The only fail more massive is #4 - I have NOT gotten around to congratulating all the winners of the Willowy Goodness Awards, including [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip, [livejournal.com profile] snogged, [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh, [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1, [livejournal.com profile] tiny_white_hats, and snowpuppies amoung others. Congratulations to all the winners (by which I include "Runners Up" aka the silver and bronze medalists). I actually did vote in that one too and cheese on a cracker did you folks make it painfully hard to choose!

ETA:  ALL credit to the amazing [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn for urging me to watch Orphan Black, which I'd never heard of until she mentioned it.

And you are FAR to kind! But thank you.

I am so sorry that your efforts fell to shit. That sucks.

And it was entirely my fault - TIME MANAGEMENT, folks. It's a thing. And I need to learn about it. Because I am kind of pissed with myself because it was the first time I felt "in the groove" creatively in weeks. OTOH - even if I didn't submit, I still made icons. I had fun and it took me places I didn't expect, so being in the contest maybe isn't the point, it's the challenge itself.

or in Vastra's case, B) fall in love with a human woman in Victorian England and solve crimes together. It's a Doctor Who thing.

*BRAIN EXPLODES WITH JOY*

Now I'm running out of excuses NOT to watch new Who!

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-21 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's ok, they were there for the morning session - and morning sexy funtimes are the BESTEST thing evah. Truth.

Huu icons! I'm gonna vote now. Pity that I won't see yours.

You should totally watch The Good Wife and Doctor Who. (Because I also watch them. LOL) I think you would like both shows, especially the first one. I would also love to see the post about depressed slayers and vegeance demons. SO MUCH. Here to read it.

Congrats on your moving back!

Dunno, but S2 has begun - 201 was this weekend.

[identity profile] zanthinegirl.livejournal.com 2014-04-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee-- I picked that one, mostly because it sounded like something I'd do myself. LOL!

And also, samurai swords. Because they're just that awesome.

Ok, wait a minute - matriarchial sword-wielding lesbian alien women warriors with Victorian wives DO YOU PEOPLE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO ME HERE? *brain explodes a SECOND time*

Well I might (or I might not *lol*) have submitted entries to challenge #23, but I didn't ask my lovely beta for help and don't feel confident about my choices.

But I'm having fun again with Photobucket (and Kwritten has introduced me to the program she uses, ipiccy, which is free online and pretty cool.) I'll probably just post the icons eventually here.

And the Good Wife is still on my must-see list! I think I'm going to do S1 of orphan black first though.

I would also love to see the post about depressed slayers and vegeance demons. SO MUCH. Here to read it.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT! I lose the initial passion and fire and then think oh, no one wants to read this. Then the other day my friend Kendra Saunders and I were having a great conversation about the buffyverse, her new novel, feminism, violation issues etc and how hard it still is for women in their 20's grappling with identity issues and realized that yes, this stuff still needs to be talked about.

Congrats on your moving back!

Thanks! I took photos of the restored hardwood floors, they're lovely. Especially in the kitchen - no more linoleum! And we have crown moldings in all the rooms and NO noisy downstairs neighbors *bliss*

Oh good, then I'm not the only one with time management issues (or maybe it was just lack of attention issues?)

I hope I'll recognize you once again! XD Also lovely challenge. I ADORE minimalism. Many of my all time favorite icons are minimalist and I love close up on Buffy. I love SMG face.

Looking foward to the meta!

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Holy cats and mice you are FAST!

I hope I'll recognize you once again!

You know, I understand the emphasis on anonymity - I'm sure the mods don't want these to be popularity contests - but on the other hand? Bored now. None of the fanfic contests/awards depend on anonymity. We wouldn't even think of it.

Every artist has a signature style and I don't want to NOT use certain effects, etc just because someone might "recognize" me. That takes up energy I don't want to waste.

Besides, I trust my friends to vote for the best icon, not vote for me. When I vote in fic contests, I vote for the work I consider the best regardless of who the author is. The same is true with icon challenges. I'm very firm in that regard.

Many of my all time favorite icons are minimalist

And I got very excited when I saw this prompt because a lot of my icons are "minimalist" because I love close ups on Buffy/SMG, *points to my PG icon* but also because I haven't had layers and fancy effects in my toolkit so I've had to make simplicity a virtue.

But I also have a lot of icons with text in them and when I tried to remove the text, sometimes the meaning was lost and I had to start fresh. I love challenging myself!

please ignore me

Never! You gave me the cliff-notes version, barb gave me the extended one - both useful to have!

this is the most lovely comment ever

I have quality, high-class entertainments at my quality par-tays. None but the best will do!

[identity profile] foxstarreh.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I guessed correctly. Not sure if that's a yay for me or not.

I did want to vote on Orphan Black, though, because that's the one that should be happening. =)

As the beta in question, I can absolutely confirm that the icons you made (and eventually sent in my general direction) were freaking excellent.

As per usual.

What, and not the "orgy"?

But yes, the Orphan Black marathon will be a happening thing now that I've settled back into the old apartment (and watched the pilot a second time with my sweetie and liked it even more than the first time.)

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno, but S2 has begun

You mean I'm only one season behind instead of four-six as usual? *squees*

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I forgot to mention your icon of Buffy in The Real Me is beautiful - and that scene gives me so many FEELINGS in hindsight because it's one of the last times we see her laugh in the series, isn't it? Right up there with watching her mother her mother show off her dress before the big date in IWMTLY on my Buffy-feels meter.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
(How could anyone NOT ship a lesbian inter-species, Victorian, crime-fighting married couple?

The fact that we live in a world where this is an actual canon couple AND you're able to say that Lucy is a very very beautiful thing indeed - and completely unimaginable just a few years ago. The revolution is happening right here, NOW, everyday.

Heck, if they ever got a spin-off, Moffat has already declared that it's be called 'Tipping the Scales'. *g*)

For a second I thought "He's read Sarah Waters?" and then I remembered, oh, miniseries adaption - but anyway my favorite of her first three books is Fingersmith. But how cool is it that he can make that reference knowing his audience will "get it"?

[identity profile] kwritten.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I've seen so many versions of this icon around and I've never been super attached to this laugh/smile - but I am totally in love with this icon a lot.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)

You are way too kind, sweetie, thank you!

Not alien. Just a different, sentient Earth-species, predating humans by a few million years. :)

And here's a good picture of Vastra & Jenny:

(I'm being very naughty & hotlinking. Hope it'll show up!)

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That laugh is one of my favorite gifs but like a lot of things in the series, it only became special in hindsight. *hugs Buffy*

Which is one of the things I love about the buffyverse, as opposed to 99% of tv shows I've seen over 40 years that are meant to be consumed like potato chips and forgotten.

The delicacy of the coloring makes it special though - I didn't notice what image it was until almost after the fact.

And hey I noticed your just another day icon of Buffy walking away from Revello Drive in EP, a scene I have made tons of icons of lately and am kind of obsessed with and HOW did I not notice it before? Because the cheerful gossamer veil of pink overlay and the text on it are so at odds with what is actually happening. I ADORE irony in icons.

And your VM icons reminded me that's also on my must-watch list. So many shows....

[identity profile] kwritten.livejournal.com 2014-04-22 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
lol are you stalking my icons silly? I nearly submitted this one to otherworldly but ended up posting something else I think. I really like how it turned out.

VM is a **must** - although new!Who is also pretty great. (VM is more important, better writing, better show all around but shhh! don't tell anyone I said that. I think you'd like the way VM confronts Feminism and class warfare especially. While Who... just completely fails on that point.)
