Tsunami of Polls #1 : Any interest in a comm devoted to Buffy and the women of the Buffyverse?

#1 - Thank you to whomever gifted me with a temporary paid account last month. Now I can create polls! Oh wonderful Anonymous Benefactor, you have no idea what you have unleashed upon this fandom.
#2 - Thanks also the the lovely [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip for coming up with the insanely awesome title/tag phrase "tsunami of polls" and allowing me to snag it.

***************

The other day I was having a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] wickedbish in which I may have mentioned that most fandoms and fandom activity, in my experience, are focused primarily on the male characters. I assumed this was common knowledge. Except that he didn't know that. Because, you see, Ryan's favorite character is Willow (see #2 in his list of "13 Witches I Fucking Love"); he still mourns Tara (as do I; shared grief is comforting) and Buffy is one of his heros. The Gift has convinced him to not commit suicide "so many times". He's all about the ladies, bless.

You know what they say about "assuming".

Oops.

Then [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 (Lucy) popped into the conversation and in her brilliant, enthusiastic way suggested the idea of a comm dedicated to Buffy, the other women in the 'verse and their interrelationships - complete with a name (Summers Blood) and a banner (she's working on it - is there no end to the young woman's talents?) and three-part harmony. What that might actually look like or what interest there would actually be in such a thing was a matter of conjecture. So I'm channeling my inner Willow (Research Gal) for my very first poll.

What say you, Gentle Reader? Based just on the title of this post, you probably know who you are and how you stand.

(And as this is my first poll, please let me know if it functions ok. And I apologize for the wonky formatting. The LJ instructions for poll-making are vague and confusing at best. So says I.)

THANKS! And that link led me (again) to womenverse, which seems to be another multi-fandom comm but not just with fic posts. (I find it a little overwhelming and confusing though - my old, old brain.*lol*)

The key is probably the extraordinary team of mods who constantly propose new and interesting activity, though being part of a new and large fandom probably doesn't hurt lol...

Yep that's pretty much the key to any successful group including real life - those who are willing to organize and those who are willing to play (or work) along with. Sometimes they are one and the same.

Sb_fag_ends is definitely one of my templates for a successful comm - but I notice nearly all the comms I'm aware of are almost entirely about fics; Lucy and I were talking about more of a discussion and all sorts of posts comm. Are there any like that already that have worked well that you know of, aside from womenverse?

Well, Womenverse is a landcomm, isn'it? That's a bit different...
Anyway I mostly dabble in graphics so I can talk about that side of things at least... [livejournal.com profile] be_compromised does a monthly (now bi-monthly or something) banner challenge which I really enjoy. Also other comms, like [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman (LOL what can i say, I'm a marvel girl), organize yearly reverse bangs, that is with fanart created first to inspire the fic.
On the other hand, my dear [livejournal.com profile] ds9_rewatch being a re-watch community has weekly chats about each episode, which could something else to do, maybe in a less intensive way. Also I see that new comms often start with some kind of friending meme in which members can describe themself, their hobbies, what they're fannish about etc. - and maybe they repeat it every so often after there's a bit of an influx of new members.

"landcomm"? Not familiar with the phrase. (There's a LOT of things about fandom I'm not familiar with.)

I love the idea of having graphics; quite a few folks on my f'list are extremely talented artists and I love playing around with images (the whole "say a thousand words" - I can see why gifts are so appealing on tumblr. I've been playing around with icons w/text that are meant to be mini-metas.)

So yes I can definitely imagine art challenges. the Buffyverse has SO many screencaps and images to play with.

Also I see that new comms often start with some kind of friending meme in which members can describe themself, their hobbies, what they're fannish about etc.

Clockwork_hart (lucy) suggested "How Buffy (fandom, character X) saved my life" as one tag/theme and I like that idea, sharing personal stories etc. When I wrote my Buffy birthday tribute the other day I had no idea it would draw out so many people talking about how much they love Buffy and what she means to them. And I think that's one of the things that really is keeping the fandom alive, because the show MATTERS to people on a personal level. That's one of the strengths of this show and it's fandom, and worth celebrating.

And btw, I really appreciate all your input and links, this helps tremendously (and is great fun!)

Well, a landcomm is a very interactive type of community, it divides members into teams, which compete with each other in games and contests (logic puzzles, drabbles, graphics...). Basically, every time you complete a challenge you'll earn points for your team and the team with the most points at the end of the round wins. :)

Also, here's all that I have of eleusis_walks that is no more accessible in an handy .zip file. Let me know if there's any problem downloading... ;)

Yay, I'm having a tremendous amount of fun too, happy to know that you are too, I was half afraid I was spamming you with recs/comments here... :D

I just downloaded it - PERFECT, THANK YOU! This new Mac Maverick OSX really is insanely fast. And the pretty pictures are there and everything! Fantastic!

Thanks for the description of the landcomm, that sounds - like more than I want to deal with. I am SO non-competitive (except with myself) it isn't even funny.

And I'm glad you're having fun too - that's one the points of my welcome post: "Safety and fun are at a premium here". As a friend of mine who is an admin on a fanboard "Why participate (in fandom) if we're not having fun?"

Yay, no problem! :)
Aw, that gif is /so/ cute...
I actually participated to [livejournal.com profile] whedonland a few summers ago and it's not so competitive as you may think. It's all good fun really and those group are more like Harry Potter houses in a way, if there's a challenge you like and you can take it you go for it and earn some points in the process, if not you'll catch another one soon enough.

Indeed, fandom is my safe/comfort place. ^^

Thanks to our snazzy brand new computer I can actually use and enjoy gifs for the first time ever. That one from OAFA is one of my favorites (Buffy & Tara are my OTF). It's Buffy's one moment of pure unadulterated joy in all of Season 6.

I maybe have to give one of those comms a try one time - I'm probably making it sound more complicated in my head than it really is.

Butting in to say that Fag Ends is not just about fics, we accept meta and art, but fic is all we can get people to do.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com 2014-02-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I have read some very good meta that were done back in the fall, but I assumed it was a fic site because that's all I was seeing, I had no idea you accepted other formats. I haven't ever written truly Spuffy fic...

I have done some Spuffy icons and artwork recently but it would have to match up with a prompt, correct?

Edited 2014-02-07 01:36 (UTC)

[identity profile] bogwitch.livejournal.com 2014-02-11 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
They would have to be 'inspired by' a prompt, the rule that applies is this one:

6. Ideally, all work should be freshly created in response to the prompts, but it won't be handbags at dawn if not. We'll just pretend we didn't notice, okay?

We take fanfics and meta up to 1000 words in length, vidlets of one minute or less, fanmixes of up to five songs, all still artwork and picspams/gifspams of up to eight images.

We do have a sister comm, [livejournal.com profile] sb_ashtray, that takes everything that doesn't fit our rules, either its too long, another pairing, too late for the current month's prompts etc.

Oh, that's interesting, I didn't know that. Though admittedly, I'm not a very strong Spike/Buffy shipper, I tend to only consume the occasional fic/video. ;)

I have been over there many times actually - but then I always get the two of them confused with each other! (Or I bookmark one but not the other *lol*)

Sounds right up my alley, thanks muchly!
